Mike, Patrick and I followed Cleatus (red dsm)and Erik (the #55 silver sti) to Wells, NY Sunday the 12th for one hell of a fun time. There were 40 cars in the Street Legal class which made for an interesting grid. I grided last on purpose the first race, not knowing what to expect, Mike did the same (he drove the 2nd heat) and the third one, I started in back and was pretty happy / proud to finish 4th from last.
www.icerace.com - there is a race this coming weekend too, too bad I will be out of town!

I was running Hakka RSi snows on a set of 17s i picked up from someone local in Roc for my winter wheels... everyone was saying the Hakka is far better than any other tires in the un-studded classes (ironic since Blizzak sponsored the event lol).
People are/were VERY careful and respectful - lets be honest, beater or not, you don't wanna be "that guy" who hit one of the expensive cars. People show up in EVOs, STis, Audis, BMWs, and not just older ones either... one of the guys I beat in heat 3 was in a e36 e28is. Sure, there is a risk, and yes, insurance would not cover this kind of thing, but there's always a risk in wheel-to-wheel racing, you get over it.

I envy you!
I’ve been wondering all winter how the Z would fare in the snow with good tires. Having a Subaru as a beater kind’a rules out the validity of a winter package for the Z.
Still, I’d like to try!
Good move on the Nokian tires. They are surreal in the snow!

i got stuck last night while doing a drift up hills in icy conditions about a block from my place and damn arent the RE040s the best in the snow...? i couldnt get any grip and landed in a pile of plowed snow lol...
but i guess its a learning experience to NOT drift uphill in snow/ice hahaha
the guys with the ram 1500 and my friend with the suv towed me out lol
drivable yes, alot of counter-steering, alot of throttle control and alot of bravery lol but sometimes summer treads just isnt enough

that's pretty cool! do you have any previous experience in road racing?
i will not drive my z period in the snow, ice, or sleet without winter rubber. last year i had to make it home from the mall while it was pounding. i made it all the way, sideways pretty much the whole way to the front gate of our school (there is a hill after which) and as soon as i tried to get up the hill.. nothing. i had to abandon my car at the end of the hill and wait for friends to come get me. i left it there until the next day.
then i hopped in my friend's honda civic and we drove around like the snow was nothing....
so yeah, high performance summer tires < snow.
