OK, I cannot run, just not the time to prep the car. But I will come out on Sunday because too many of you studs, (Scott, Mike A, Mike B, Steve) are going to be there and I cannot pass that up. SO I will bring the beast to the Nissan Sport booth, park it, wear a nifty cap and hang around to help you guys take tire temps, swap wheels and generally work up a sweat without the fun of tearing around the track. Looking forward to seeing you all out there.

No time to prep the car ???........ I am sure Mark and I can help you out if you can get us the car, we do have 10 whole days, I'm pretty sure it doesn't need much.......

No crying here, been getting lots of track time in the last couple of months. Laguna Seca four times (including the Skip Barber racing car control clinic with my two oldest sons, a nice driver tune up), Sears Point, Buttonwillow, Thunderhill (abbreviated due to rain so did not get a good run in), and two days at Firebird in the Bondurant advanced racing school with five hours of track time each day...just awesome learning experience), all in four months. That is a dream series of months for me and the car. Ok to take a breather.
My appreciation for what the car can do has risen substantially in the last half year of study and practice and experience, and my skill sets have also jumped appreciably with the intense instruction and seat time, for which there just is no substitute. Having an Indy Lights driver teach you for two days is just wonderful (and about the most humbling thing I have had to go through....the fellow was just great and was so many light years above me that it really was an eye opener on what can be done with a car. I would like to think I am just like him....except as we joked his pucker factor is a mere 50mph above mine!)
I will see you guys there and cheer you on! And let Dave O school me on some more scientific analysis that he and the boys at Nissan Sport Magazine have been conducting for their next issue. I will bring the car and put it in their booth, flop out a chair and kick back. After the day is done, if you are up for it, I will buy a couple rounds for you hard chargers to celebrate.
Well Ed, I am glad that you are going to come out afterall even if its just on the sidelines
. Maybe you can give me a quick rundown of the things you learned at all of those driving schools.
Beta - It would be good to meet you, if you come down, be sure to find us and say hi!

At Laguna Seca I think the first time out using things learned in my own car, and it behaves differently than the mustangs cobras of course, I cut two seconds off my lap times. In the advanced group I was routinely running 1:47-1:48 lap times in traffic, and down around 1:42-1:43 when I could get clear. That felt huge to me, and it was way more comfortable and smooth than my fast laps before. Just using up that cushion of comfort that I had to leave on the track every lap because I was so concerned about being on the edge and losing it. Now with better recovery and control skills, and working the edge frequently, it is a safer place for me and the lap times just come down naturally. Better heel and toe technique was probably responsible for about a full second of time....showing that not doing it, or not doing it well just means you are throwing time in the trash can.....and better and smoother counter steer and superior corner exit speed from being able to point the car and get on throttle sooner was good for about 2 seconds per lap. I really did not get as many clear laps as I wanted because I had to keep lifting throttle and short shifting at the sound station on the climb from turn 5 to turn 6, and there was a lot of traffic, so probably there is another second or two in the bottle to come out at this particular skill level. After training with the instructors...I have no doubt that they could just jump in my car and beat me by five seconds a lap, if not a lot more. They were awesome!
You will definately have to sit down with me and go through this with me. Training yourself to look farther ahead or to calm down your inputs at speed is the tough part. When I first started in Beginner level HPDEs I was lucky enough to get an instructor from the Skip Barber school out here in Vegas to be my instructor for that HPDE as he was out there with his own car. I learned more that session from him than I have learend from all of the other instructors I have had combined. He taught me about looking forward, keeping your hands in one place on the steering wheel, and much more that helped me pick up the basics fairly quickly. I had my first track day in September 2004 and my second in February of 2005 so I have really not been doing this for long and thanks to that instructor I got a little head start in figuring out the basics. It takes a while to refine new skills and even after two years, I still catch myself looking at the car ahead of me instead of the track. Maybe a few more years and I will start to be able to use my car to its real potential
