Default getting some track rims and tires

So i am new to auto-x and would like to start doing it on a regular basis. What i dont want to do is kill my new rims and tires as they are 19's and tires get pretty expensive. I have come across some possible track rims and tires. The first set i can get is an old set of 240sx five star 16's for $100 they would need new tires and i could buy some r comp tires or better. the second set is a set of 17" z rims for $400 they have a lot of tread left on the stock tires. i know the 16's wont fit if i go with a new brake kit and i dont have brembos. Any help would be greatly appricated. thanks in advance ryan.

One of the first questions you have to ask yourself is "what class do I want to run in?" If your car is stock, and you want to run in B-Stock, then you have to have the same size wheels (diameter, width and offset within 5mm) that came with your car. If your car is modified (CAI, springs, test pipes) then you'd have to drop down a class to B-Street Prepared. There you can run any size wheels.

Whatever you do, do NOT use your 19" rims for auto-x. And definitely do not buy 16" rims for your Z. If funds are limited, look for 17" stockers instead of 18" rims. Tires are cheaper. But you'll have to compete in BSP if 17" rims were not the stock size for your Z.

ok so i shouldnt buy the 16's i should go with the 17's. and no my car isnt stock i have every bolt on except headers so the stock class is out. i guess i will just get the 17's and burn up the stock tires on those first. then i will get some better rubber. thanks for all the help and if anyone else has any input feel free to help me out thanks ryan.

17x9 works well for me. if you could get a set of 16x9s and still find tires that would be almost ideal. i know a lot of auto x-ers go for as wide as they can.

If my car is already out of stock, I would use 16x9. I think 255 all around would be plenty good for a Z with stock power.

I run 285 on all 4 corners on my 07. I've had to adjust to the rear wheels breaking traction in a straight line accelerating in 2nd gear if I floor it. I have to be careful with the throttle. My 03 would jump but not spin the 710s.

IMO the optimal wheel & tire size for the Z in an auto-X application, taking into account affordability for performance, would be a 17x9.5 wheel, +30mm w/ a 275/40-17 tire on all 4 corners.

- I've run an 18x9.5, +30mm good performance but a little too expensive and less options for a 275/35-18 tire (street or R-comp). Much more options w/ 275/40-17 tires.
- I've also run on a set of 17x9 +27mm, good performace but I think the 1/2 inch could optimize the benefits up front. I've heard of some guys running a 17x10" up front, dunno if that would be possible w/o deviating from the +30mm offset.

I've been looking for a fairly light set of 17x9.5 +30mm for a while now and have been unsuccessful. The closest I could find were some RPF1's 17x9.5 +35mm. If anyone knows of an acceptable set of wheels meeting this critera, please let me know.

i am still waiting for my sway bars to come in and then i have to break in my nismo lsd. after that i will probly get my fcon hooked up and tuned, then pick up some wheels and tires for the track. odds are i will get the stock 17's and burn the rubber off of them first then get some r comps. i know it is on the site somewhere but what is the widest tire you can put on the stock 17's. thanks again for everyone advise.
