I've got a set sitting in the garage waiting to be used. They're pretty heavy compared to hoosiers, but I don't have an unmounted Toyo Ra-1 to compare it to. For $149 on closeout they look like a good deal to me.

 

I know the El Guapo (tt.net open tracker for all you others) likes them. $149/tire really can't be beat if they mildly compare to the Hoosier. Is there a revision coming out?

Edit: If they are good for both track and autox, they will not be the best at either. The Kumho Victoracer falls into this category. It's a decent track tire and an ok autox tire, but does not compare to a dedicated autox (V710) AND dedicated open track tire (Hoosier R3-series, etc).

 

I have the older Tech-R, and really enjoy them. Then again, I've only tried a couple other r-comps, so...

Maybe you missed my point: a friend who tracks his 300ZX TT often (heavier than the 350) swears by them. He uses that same size as well.

 

How did I miss the point? Should we close down the forum now that we have your one response? Surely, there's others who have used this Unicorn-like tire.

Edit- my bad it's not even technically your response. Currently, it's 3rd-hand inforamtion at very best, regarding a different car altogether.

Another data point from a different car (a Spec Miata). I picked up a used set for a two day event at VIR. I put 500 miles on them over two days and I was impressed with the wear. I've got one tire that is pretty worn but through proper tire placement I am sure I can get another day or two out of them.

I thought they were slower than the Toyos but not by much. Turn in was a bit soft but once the car set there was plenty of grip. I did one session of over an hour and turned my fastest lap about 50 minutes into the session.

I wouldn't buy them to race on but I would definately jump on a well priced set for HPDE events either for my SM or for my Z.

I just sold a set in that size. As Gary just stated, would not use them for racing, but would be great for a track day.

On my Factory Five Cobra they were just too hard. Made a four second difference at cmp on the same day compared to well used 710's. The 710's I had bought last august and were near the end of their life with multiple races on them.

For the price and track days I don't think you can go wrong.

So you're saying the worn 710's were better than the Avon's?

 

Avon's aren't the best pure & simple.

My advice, if you want cheap r-comps, look at the C5 and C7 Hankook Z214's. The C7 is the stickiest compound and many top autocross drivers are finding them to be competitive with the A6 and V710 -- with the durability of the V710. The C5 is the medium grip compound and good for both autocross and track days.

Personally, I run C51 245/40/17 Z214's for regional autocross events on my '06 WRX. From my experience, the Avons didn't feel much grippier than a similarly sized Victoracer...

One of my ITA competitors was running the Avons and his feedback was much the same as on this thread. Good, but not exceptional traction. Heavy when compared with other R-compounds on the market. Durability was a strong suit and price is certainly reasonable.

So, for my money, the Avons would be a good track day tire value. But, if you're looking for a competitive, state-of-the-art R-compound tire, keep looking...
