Default “Style Points” - I get it.

Sunday before last, I was racing autocross. On my 5th and final run, I got a little aggressive, and was working hard to correct oversteer situations. After crossing the finish line, I hit the brakes hard. The rear of the car slid, and hit a couple of cones. I heard the announcer say “2 style points.”

When I picked up my time sheet, I got a DNF for hitting cones after the finish line. There were no “style points.”

Now I get it. Style points are a joke for doing something dumb.

Our local clubs penalize you two seconds per cone for any after the finish line. They usually set up three alternating walls to force drivers to slow to a crawl before entering the grid again. Lots of opportunities to hit something!

That must be a local rule. I would expect a cone penalty for each cone but not a DNF unless you went outside the exit corridor.

I had the same problem. My best run was taken away from me because I couldnt slow the car to a complete stop before the end of the track.

It's a DNF in our local club if you knock down any cones after the finish line. Heck, last month, I was also on my last run, going for broke, and lost it at the end . . . went straight into the timer! Luckily, our club is smart enough to cover it on a milk crate and the only damage was a broken cord.
