Default Oil Changes - How often when tracking?

I am fortunate that my trash pick up has a great oil recycling program.
I am beginning to think, however that my trash guy is thinking I am crazy.
I change the oil (mobil 1) before every track day. I always thought of it as cheap insurance, but wonder if I am being wasteful.

So, what do you do? Every track day? Every other track day?

Thanks!
Marc

Hey Marc,

If you're using good quality oil, you can definately go more than 1 trackday between changes.

I do about 2-3 trackdays, about 2k miles between changes and that's with conventional Castrol that the dealer uses. I want to start using my own oil but since the 06 models have oil consumption issues, I want to have all the dealer records that show the oil has been changed on time. So far my car doesn't consume oil(about 1/2 quart) every 2k miles with track duty in the mix.

I've seen guys track the crap out of their cars and change the oil every 5k if using synthetic. There is a great thread on oil somewhere around here with UOA and all.

You coud go 4-5 trackdays with Mobil 1. Are you using 5-30 or 0-30 like many are?

This info is of course debatable, since oil is up ther with religion and politics when it comes to "preferences"

Thanks. I did a search on oil and you get about 10,000 oil consumption threads.

I have not been using 5-30 or 0-30....but will look into it.

Thanks for the input Mistico!

Here is the one about oil consumption on 06 models with the rev-up(6MT only):
https://my350z.com/forum/engine-and-drivetrain/232332-revup-oil-consumption-tsb-and-discussion.html You'll need a while to read the whole thing.

This is the one on Oil analysis and the ones that have been tested:

I run Mobil 1 0-40 and change every third event. (This comes to a total of about 30-40 runs @ about 30-80 seconds each)

So I change my oil every 3 months, but I don't run road courses (yet) and I don't DD my Z. I end up with less than 1.5k miles on the oil when it's changed.

I am comfortable with this, but the only way to know if your oil change interval is right for your oil, car, and driving conditions is to get a UOA.

Think "hours" of track time to figure out when you need to change the oil. Every 20 hours is reasonable unless its very hot.

I usually do it every 3-4 track events. Around 10-15 hours on track.

Great. Thanks to all. 10-15 hours seems like an excellent metric.

Laguna Seca in one week!!!!!

I changed mine before every track weekend. Oil only. I checked it regularly during the event.

And I stuck to the recommanded maintenance schedual for oil and filters.

I change mine every 7500 miles despite the number of track days I get in within that mileage interval. Considering 7500 is the recommended change interval for the Z filled with conventional oil, I figure going with full synthetic for 7500 miles, plus getting 6-8 track days in would be good enough in my book. I have no quantitative data to back my logic though, but I have owned two cars that have gone past 200,000 miles on the odo while changing my oil at 10,000-12,000 mile intervals. Neither of those cars were track cars, though, and I used dino oil for both cars.

My owner's manual (2007 Z) says the interval is 3750, not 7500. 6-8 track days and 7500 miles in between oil changes (synthetic or not!) would seem like pretty risky behavior to me...but it's your engine!

I believe the 3750-mile interval is for car that undergo severe duty, like towing, stop and go traffic in dusty conditions, the track, etc...The 7500-mile interval is for typical driving (commute and weekend trips). My plan is to take this last batch of oil and send them in for testing to see if my 7500-mile interval plus 6 track days is too much for the oil. That's the only way to find out.
