Default helmets (Track / Autox)

Any recommendations?

I've been told I have the typical "Asian head". I dunno, it's sorta big?

I'm looking for the typical: comfort, visibility, budget style helmets.

And if so, where to purchase? I know I'm supposed to go test fit them, but there aren't any local shops around here that sell them. I'll have to just measure my head and buy it online. If it doesn't fit then send it back for a different size lol.

Thanks!

I've wondered about the sizing too. Maybe the manufacture has a way to equate a head measurement to size. I went big with Bell to protect my noggin. Local shop, Averill Racing Stuff in Madison Heights. They might be able to help you out. Got lucky and the first one I tried on fit perfect.

I went with a Bell M4 helmet from www.saferacer.com. They're an awesome company. They drop shipped my helmet directly from Bell because I told them I needed it by the weekend with no extra charge. Definitely check them out.

Motorcycle helmets have a different Snell rating than ones designed for auto racing. Be sure to look for a helmet with a SA-rating before purchasing.

Trying them on is great, buying a motorcycle helmet is not. No matter how many impacts it is tested/rated for, if it is not SA rated, most sanctioning bodies won't accept them. M rated means absolutely nothing n the world of road racing.

I take that back, I think NASA HPDE's allow you to use an M rated helmet, but definitely not for racing, and I'm pretty sure many other sanctioning bodies won't accept an M rated helmet at all.

The Bell Mag-4 is about $300. SA05 certified.

Agree. A motorcycle shop is not the place for a auto racing helmet. Still you can get an idea about size at a motorcycle shop.

I would say about 90% of HPDE's and schools now require SA helmets

You'll be more than fine with any Bell. GForce is worth looking into for a slightly less expensive helmet

M2005 is a lower standard than SA2005. I'm looking for an open face SA2005 (for air bag compatibility) that has the option for working with a HANS device. Anyone know of one?

Do you want HANS, or generic head restraint protection?

it's not necessarily lower, with respect to its inferiority. they are just different ratings. "M" rated interior helmet material is not fire retardent. it doesn't have to be because if you are in a bike accident, you will just get thrown away from the fire hazard (so the assumption goes). an "S" rated helmet does have fire retardent material inside because if there's a fire in the car, you don't want your face to melt off.

Check out HJC. I just bought one an hour ago. Great helmet for the price. I paid $269. SA2005 approved.
