Fuel Pickup Problems

Fuel Pickup Problems
Anyone have any fuel pickup problems out on the track? If my tank is 11 gallons or less I have hesitiation from lack of fuel when exiting corners. When I have a full tank it doesn't happen. Anyone using a surge tank or heard of anyone with similar problems using one?

You may have some other problem, not fuel pickup. At every track event I've been on, I leave at the end of the day with an empty tank and have never seen any problems with starvation.

I have this happen at VIR while exiting hog pen if I have less than a half tank of gas. It's a pretty common thing, but it depends on the track.
I just try to keep it higher than a half tank when I go on track.

Yep. We had the same starvation when our car was stock. The only solution I know of is to add a second fuel pump and pump fuel from the one side into the swirl pot with the stock pump in it. It takes a lot of work but its doable. Impact Engineering did it for our car.

I was looking to pick up one of these surge tanks. it's not plumbed correctly but I know how to fix that. I have 565whp. That might have somwething to do with it. I use about 4 gallons per 20 minute session and toward the end of the second session it starts happening usually on left hand sweepers.

I have experienced the same trouble in the fast left to right sweepers if the level drops to less than one third tank. If I keep the level at one half before starting the session, it is fine.

What do you think about using this for a surge tank? It's cheap and looks quality.

I get fuel starvation (or symptoms that appear to be fuel starvation) with anything near 1/4 tank or less. I just always make sure I keep it at half a tank or more. Not hard to do, most tracks have gas there, and if not, it makes a good excuse for a lunch run.

I don't think it has anything to do with the pump, it's more of a pickup issue. If the vehicle sustains lateral g's that push the fuel to the opposite side of the fuel pickup, it will starve the system. Can fabricators add spring loaded trap doors or baffling to help with the fuel starvation?

would you need a (second?) inline pump to pull fuel from the stock tank and feed that? or ... ?
(strange I never had any problems with my APS TT at the glen with nothing upgraded but a walboro pump - and I was pushing it, that's for sure... turned a 2:19 / 160+ on the back straight hehe)
god this reminds me why I'm so happy back closer to stock when it comes to track days......

The in tank Walbro feeds the surge tank, and and then another external pump pumps the fuel from the surge to the motor.
Maybe I have to crack open the fuel tank to see what's up. Mayeb there is something wrong in there.

I talked the phunk.... the jedi master of the Z fuel system and he brought up something I never thought of. He remembered my car had a Turbonetics system on it at one point and Turbonetics had you modify the swirl pot by drilling 2 holes in it which basically makes it worthless. It looks like I will have to buy a new fuel pump assembly and replace it.
