Prepping for cage install - couple questions
So I am prepping for my cage build and I was wondering what people have done with the large metal speaker box/enclosure? I noticed that it is bolted down and that would not have been an issue, but I also noticed it looks tack welded in many places.

Are most of you guys removing this? Is it legal per NASA PT or SCCA T2 rules?
ALSO, I have looked at a few pictures and most of you guys are removing the black corner sections in this picture. I was unsure to remove them as I did not know if they provided any kind of rigidity.

Thanks!
Neil

My black cover are removed, and both OEM braces are still installed...

^ beauty cage! What are you using as a pump for the diff oil?
OP: I am gutted from the rear back as well, and know the bolts you talk about, but there is no way to remove that top speaker shelf without some cutting. I could a cage setup easier as you have more room to do a sharper angle (if you wanted to), but from what I have seem people go over top of it pretty easy.
Just to hijack slightly, do the black covers offer anything structural? Any reason not to remove them?

I have to leave mine in for the cage install (class rules) but am cutting the rear strut tower brace out and welding in a tubular one. I just want a little extra room for bringing stuff to the track.
LAZE,
could you please pm me pics or show us more pics of your diff cooler set up, top and bottom, would like to see the floor penetrations in the AN fittings...
Ive wanted to make a hatch side fill port!
cage looks awesome too...love it!
I like the Passenger side dash mounted kill switch too...

I believe the PO purchased a kit from bimmerworld.com...and it uses a Genises Oil Pump

Here are the pix,
But I don' think it is installed correctly....even if the Bimmerworld pix show its mounted this way. I talked with Genesis and they suggested that the pump be at a low point in the system to prevent cavitation...(pump going dry)
So I have removed the system and will reinstall it with the pump under the ~trunk floor, and maybe all the other parts as well...if I can find a safe place for the cooler...The thing puts off some HEAT! So it makes racing in the South even HOTTER!
Note: The PO said this leaked after using it for a couple of races...i think the pump ran dry and cooked the seals...but Genisis sells a seals kit for about $40 and will also rebuild then as needed.
Also, these is used primarily for Enduro races, not so much sprint races...

I know nothing about your rules. However, I know that cutting out that panel gave me tons of room and makes it look like it was a 2x2. Oh, and maybe got me 60lbs lighter? We didn't weigh it... just sayin.
Anyone familiar with NASA and/or SCCA rules know if the removal of that section will violate rules? I am thinking it will in SCCA but NASA it may not as long as you arent below minimum weight?
Guess I may have to wade through the rule books...

The Nissan Sport Project 350Z T2 car was built to SCCA T2 rules and has been campaigned for the past three seasons. I can categorically say that you CANNOT remove the rear shelf section. The bolt-in rear bracing has to stay as well. While I also race the Z in NASA PTB, I cannot modify it any further without exceeding SCCA prep limitations.
Mount the fan under the cooler and cut a hole in the floor pan to vent it down. Put a screen over the hole in the pan to keep the squirrels out. The pump doesn't need to be the low point, just make sure its below the natural fluid level in the diff. You can also mount the cooler under the car up near the trans tailshaft. That's how the press fleet 370Zs were setup.
^ ya me too...lol..
Nackers, did they mask off the entire car for paint? how was the cage painted?
Also, is this your second cage in the car??? i see mount plates off the back strut bar unused??
man, i really gotta get going on fab'n a cage..
