^- most really track oriented people tend to rate the kw's v#'s to be too soft.

a KW V3 is nowhere near a competitive setup for this car. Its well suited for a club type track day, etc, but would be out of place on a competition setup.

Most would say V3's, just like the Koni Yellows would need to be re-valved and correctly sprung for anything more than intermediate track-day lapping. There's a couple threads on the forum that has seen sets sold because they were too street oriented. But if you can get them for a good price and can wait a few weeks for a re-valve and spring they may be the best bargain.

the mx5 cup isn't a bad way to go but it is very expenses and a limited schedule with a bunch of pro drivers. I think a better option is the standard spec miata. its a lot of fun, competitive, large schedule, and reasonably priced

yeah but the series offers driver coaching for 200 and the fastest lap from the winner in a mx5 was a 1.45.6 at rd atlanta and i feel like i can compete with that. i was thinking that it would be a good way to get a little recognition even if i don't win every race. i still have to take the advanced two skip school and i am going to see if i can get it at lime rock
. and i am required a practice session before my first race that i was going to try and do at road america that way i can have 3 of the tracks in the series pretty well down. also it would keep me from having to build my own car since they let us use theirs.

Actually, the winner of the April race ran a 1:40:88, and the top 5 all ran sun 1:42's. 10 seconds a lap is a long way to go. There are some rally good private coaches in the south east you can take advantage of (Mike Skeen, Peter Krause, ETC) in any series, plus a lot of schools that offer coaching and hot laps, plus competition all in one nice weekend package.

Go down that road if you want, but I think you will end up spending quite a bit of money, and learning a lot less than if you take one of these other routes.

If given the choice in your situation.....I'd run SM over MX5. Much less costly, tons of competition, and a million events all over the place.

im talking about the maszda speed challenge by skip barber. i think your talking about the actual mx5 cup. the mazda challenge is how you get into the cup. if you win it over all they give you a car the kit to build it and free entree fees into the mx5 cup for the following season. i talked on the phone with evan g from the main office at skip barber earlier today and he gave me that 1.45.6 time for the winner of the mazdaspeed challenge at road atlanta. i am still confused by all these different classes and organizations. spec miata is sccas? i already signed up for the sb advanced 2day school at lime rock so after that i will be able to see where i stand in lap times there too.

Trackpedia has the Spec Miatas in the 1:44 range, 1:40's seem to be a long way out on that. What mods do they allow in that series mhowart1?

mainly it's HP. The MX5 Cup cars have around 195 HP and a higher rev limit.

The SCCA Spec Miata Record is 1:42 and change, and the NASA one is 1:43 I think.
