New NASA Class for 2012: Spec Z
You would get the same level of spares, etc with the T1 car.
Also, the shocks alone those guys run (most are at least two way penskes) cost about as much as the whole spec Z suspension...
Agree with the supply and demand, though.

Agreed...and I have been shopping for some other prospective Spec Z drivers/owners...and that is about right.
Even If you can get a properly caged car for $15-17k, it will still cost ~$7k on top of that to play. I recently found a decent PTB car for $17K, and that would still need ~$10k in parts and spares to race competitively in Spec Z. And that price doesn't include a "fresh" stock but powerful engine (semi-cheater
).
Also found a good T2 car for $25K...and that would still need to be converted to Spec Z...

but I don't think a T1 vette will pass Spec Z tech inspection

Frankly, in NASA-SE, Spec E30 is far and away the best bang-for-the-buck, and with 10-20 on track per weekend...I was gonna sell my PTB car and buy a SpecE30 when Spec Z was announced...
You should see the IFU race they run each year...what a hoot
IFU= Inverterd Field ..not sure what U stands for
just google SpecE30 & IFU for some crazy vidz

It's going to be pretty cool this weekend at T-hill.
I looked through http://www.nasaproracing.com/rules/s...rules_2012.pdf and http://www.nasaproracing.com/rules/ccr.pdf and it appears that only a bolt-in fire extinguisher is required? There are class-specific rules, but since SpecZ doesn't appear anywhere (that I've found), is one left to - ut oh - assume that a full fire system isn't required? I'll ask at tech this weekend to be sure, but have also found that those guys aren't omniscient about their own rules.
I know the PT guys don't require a full fire system. My buddy just passed tech in his Z06 for PTA with a fire extinguisher. It needs to be mounted within in reach though while you're all strapped in so you can get to it without unbuckling. It obviously has to have certain retardant in it as well. I can't remember the kind though...

If you choose to use a hand-held extinguisher, you're basically saying you meet the letter of the rule, but don't EVER expect to use it if needed. The hose clamps used to hold them in place won't allow you to use them at speed when needed. And while the possibility is admitedly low, I think it makes more sense to have a functioning fire suppession system in place since the rules call for one.
As for the BFG R1S, they tested them at the Runoffs last year and I had a set to run on my T2 Z. Definitely a step up from the standard R1 and durability has been surprising. But since we've got a spec R1, we don't have to worry about it.

I want both, I will totally lose first place to pull over and be able put out some poor Ferrari's fiery death.
More Silly Technical Q's: Will the elongated toe bolt holes on rear subframe and the bumps I ground down on front spindles to clear UCA's be illegal? And I see no provision for oil cooling, only power steering? I'll just sell current car and start fresh if those are issues.

As for oil coolers, check out Appendix A in the Spec Z rules again. It clearly says oil coolers are FREE (ie. pick or build your own).
Thanks, I don't know how I missed the oil cooler in the appendix. Too much stuff on the car isn't spec, bushings, links etc. Even if I sell the good parts on the car to build to spec I have to buy all the OE stuff again. Works out to almost same money either way. I don't think I can part with the OSG diff and Ohlins suspension though, save it for G35 6spd sedan later.
