Default 4-speed Z

Seems like 5th gear is toast for me (and 6th is useless at the track..). The transmission seems to grind anytime i am shifting into 5th at any decent pace. I initially ordered some new transmission fluid thinking it might help, but the more I think about it, I assume it must just be the synchro going bad. I am pretty sure my transmission is not a CD009 since it was replaced way back in the day like 2004.

So my question is, is it worth trying to change the fluid, or should I be looking for a new transmission?

Takes minutes to change the fluid. Might be a synchro but a fluid change is cheap and easy. Give it a shot.

Hopefully, you're using Redline MT85 for the tranny fluid change.

Don't waste your cash on the fluid , you need a rebuild.

maybe old transmission isn't providing the needed lubrication for shifting gears? I don't really know what the extreme consequence of old/bad/worn fluid would be. It seemed a stretch since it's for only one gear, but I was hopeful!

I don't know much (anything) about rebuilding a transmission. Is this a viable option? I know the synchros are crap. Can a bad one just be replaced? Would it be much less expensive to rebuild versus buying a new one (and installing myself)?

Sorry bro, just doesn't work like that. You need to rebuild.

News trans can be found pretty cheap online. Whether that is cheaper and more durable than a rebuild probably depends on how labor rates and competent shop availability in your area.

About the redline MT fluid... I get better results from conventional transmission oil.. as do many when it comes to our specific transmission. I ended up buying Ford Motorcraft® SAE 75W-90 API GL-4 Gear Oil from a Ford dealer as it is much cheaper than Nissan's and seems to be higher rated from some online research.

Whats up Rajjjjj!

Im so amazed at how humble you are asking these questions, people are gonna think youre a newb and not passing vettes at the track, LOL!

New vs rebuild I say go new...even if it was feasible monetarily I HIGHLY doubt I would trust the tech enough to get it done and make the work stick. But then again you know how I am with trusting people to touch my car.

Hi guys. I'd appreciate some advice regarding the transmission replacement.

I'm stuck between two options, new or used. I've found someone local selling a CD009 with approx 50k miles. Seller claims it was working in perfect condition with no grinding when it was removed. The cost is only $400. The other option is to go with a new transmission which I can get for ~$1800. Obviously this option should have no problems, and I will know that it hasn't been abused yet.

The savings of the used is pretty significant. But at the same time, I don't really plan on selling the Z anytime soon, and prefer to only have to do this job once. Spending nearly 20% of the current value of the car seems crazy though. I am back and forth in my mind.

The Z is only driven to and from track (hpde) events now. Either way, I will probably replace the clutch as well since it's pretty inexpensive.

Is there anything else i should consider replacing while doing this job?

Then the seller will give you a written money-back guarantee? Say 50,000 miles?

Let's say yes about a money back guarantee but not 50,000 miles. At the current pace that would be more than 10 years anyway.

No opinions? Has everyone just sucked it up and bought a new transmission when they have had issues?

If you trust the seller, than go with the used tranny. I'd fill it with Redline MT85 and also replace the clutch slave at the same time.
