I was sharing my car with a buddy, so the car did double duty, at least 6 sessions each day and no issues at all. Here's my buddy driving in the black group:
Woot, got tracking info for the wing, should be here next week. So if everything arrives correctly I just might be heading to VIR on April 4-5 for a couple open track days to test is out.
It's the Street Faction crash bar and uprights with what honestly is a fairly crap wing they source from an unnamed manufacturer. I tried to get just the bar and uprights but the price difference was negligable, so I got the whole setup. The wing is CF but not nice CF, the fit and finish leaves a lot to be desired. The endplates didn't even line up with the threaded holes in the wing, I had to modify the plates to get them to fit. I'll test the wing's performance at VIR, but I fully expect to need to replace it with a better unit soon. The actual SF hardware, which is what I was really interested it, quality seems high, the crash bar is steel and the uprights are tig welded aluminum, everything is powder coated nicely. I'll comment on the fit once I get it on the car.
Wing installed. At this point I decided to leave the bumper as is and just added a piece of sheetmetal between the floor of the trunk and the bottom of the bumper to keep it from being an air brake. Once I have more time I'll go back and probably cut away a big portion of the bottom of the bumper in favor of a proper diffuser. But VIR is a week away, so no time for that now.
Fitment was pretty good, the plastic bumper cover is sitting right against the tubular bumper with just a hint of stretch, not bad at all.
Thru motorsportsreg.com, although it's only open to instructors, racers and expert level drivers. Folks need to have an existing experience resume with the organizers to attend.
Just got back from VIR, it was a good two days of testing. I'll save my comments on the wing setup until I have some videos processed, but for now here's a couple beauty shots from the paddock
Ok, so let's get into this. Bottom line is I only managed to improve my best lap by less than a second, I got a 2:11.7 best. While the wing did improve my cornering speeds and I was able to go up to esses flat out at 120mph instead of the previous 115mph, on the straights I lost about 5mph to drag, topping out at 130 mph. And that's with the wing in the most horizontal position. Also the leading edge of the wing cf split after the first session. It held together but it's basically junk. I kinda expect it to be crap but this is still very disappointing.
Also, I notice drips of fluid coming from the left side of the diff, I didn't get a good look yet, but my guess is that even with the Z1 finned extra capacity cover the diff is still overheating and spraying fluid out of the breather on top. So do I need to get a diff cooler now? Sigh...
nice laps. sucks that wing is falling apart already. I was wondering how you would know if the diff was overheating. Thats the only thing I dont have a aftermarket cooler for, so far i havent had any issues. Let me know what you go with if you decide to upgrade..
A few comments on that wing. It looks like a junk profile . The AoA also still looks pretty steep for a high speed track. I also think you will need to remove the ducktail on the trunk. I expect that it is messing up the flow on the underside of the large wing. Sasha did a very interesting video on aero testing the 350z.
I would also be a bit cautions adding a bunch of rear aero grip and no front aero grip. Having your grip shift rearwards with speed can make for some weird handling behaviors.
Agreed, this wing is junk, the leading edge is almost flat, the profile is a joke. The duck tail might go at some point, especially if I decide to do a CF rear hatch with smaller glass for weight reduction. I think there's a lot to be gained there.
I was a bit concerned without large front splitter if the front grip would be reduced but I didn't find it to be. I do need to stiffen up the rear struts a few turns for better initial grip going into turns, I was experiencing some scrubbing on initial turn in before the car would settle down and grip.
