Good memories
I was just watching a replay of a can am race at watkins and thought I'd relate an experience I had years ago.
It was maybe on a Saturday afternoon- good weather- and I went over by myself to the downhill speed area - the beginning of the boot. Fast area with a rt turn at the bottom. Good straight thereafter
I heard the roar of the cars through the bus stop, I guess & they roared on a wide rt turn, gearing down to take the left down a lengthy straight to the heel of the boot.
I was on the rt side of the downhill & there was a deer on the track. I'm not shitting you.
I started yelling at it- waving my hands & I actually scared it off before these freaking behemoths came roaring by me. The deer took-off & the race never skipped a beat.
Thats my story.
Anybody have a good one?

Moved to a more appropriate forum, but I'll try to add to it at least. Back in 1986 I went to Lime Rock Park to race in the Eastern Motor Racing Association (EMRA) Time Trials with my Honda Prelude. The paddock was full of high-end cars, including many Ferraris. The morning practice was held under overcast skies. Around noon, the skies opened up, and so did the transporters. Ferraris and other high HP collector cars left by the dozen and only about a hundred (!) cars remained to face the steady rain that afternoon. Lime Rock is a little speed bowl and at that time, had no chicane on the back straight leading to the uphill "climbing turn". But after studying the track, I decided that was the best place to find some time. In one session, I tried almost full speed at the end of the back straight with a brake and smooth heel-toe downshift into that turn. The car slid as I turned in and my stomach told me I would be piling into the armco barrier shortly afterwards.
But the slide slowed as I hit the bottom of the hill and picked up stick on the slick pavement. I recall the exhilaration as I carried my speed all the way through the apex and to the top of that hill. I managed to keep the Honda on the track (using Yokohama A001s) for the rest of the lap to finish 10th overall for the day. Perhaps if I wrecked that day, I might never have gone on to a motorsports career that's now spanned four decades. Maybe that day, I was the deer that walked away from certain carnage.
