I ruined my shift **** too taking it off.

I have a question about the black ring that is under neath the OEM shift boot. My friend had to cut my shift **** off with a hack saw which exposed a cast iron **** that was then removed. He took the shift boot off over this iron shift **** to give us more room to hold the lever steady, but doesn't remember seeing this black plastic ring. Does anyone know where I can find a replacement, or is it not that necessary? I am thinking it was destroyed if he pulled the shift boot over the **** with it still attached. I could not find part information for it on courtesy parts.

This is the piece in question:

WTF!
this is very difficult. the shaft that you grab with the vice grips is round and plastic so it just turns in the vice grips. i don't want to crush it! can you really clamp down on something round, smooth, and plastic enough to do this job. how would the dealer do it?

i finally got it done. the key is the rubber bands on the vice grips. it allowed enough grip to hold the shaft.

Just finished with a Forged Performance shift **** on my 2003. After reading through this thread, I was kind of "gun shy", but was pleasantly surprised when I went to do it. I just used vice grips around the rubber on the shaft, and used channel-locs on the shifter itself.

Just apply slow, steady pressure, and put the shifter in 3rd or 5th gear if you are pushing away from you, or one of the others gears if you are pulling towards you.

I agree 100%, I just did mine in about 1 min on my 2007 Z. The shift **** unscrewed with very little force being applied to the **** itself. However I supported the rubber shaft with vice grips very sturdily ... I didnt want to mess anything up.

For those with the rubber thing over the shaft: just roll it down to expose the shaft. What i did then was i wrapped around 25 rubber bands on both sides of the vice grips. THIS WORKS GREAT! after that, i just attached them on the shaft. I used channel-locks on the ****, double wrapped a towel around it. And then i just twisted the ****. The vice grips held on the to the shaft perfectly. Here are some pics:

How did you manage to roll down the rubber on the shaft? Mine seems to be stuck on there like there is no tomorrow and won't budge

I put the vice grips right onto or over the rubber boot .... tightly. I believe this is only to hold the shaft from moving or rotating. It worked perfectly for me.

I put the vice grips tightly on the rubber ... and then twisted off the shift **** with a small pair of pliers. It came right off for me, the oem **** did get scratched slightly but who cares.

This photo came out terrible for some reason !!

For those who have not the OEM rubber finisher, I found a site where the do the finisher in stainless and alu. :

http://www.zeetoyz.com/350z.htm

Here a pic of my 350ZR

(this is the alu. model)

for me it just look better than the cheap black toilet finisher made by Nismo.
