DIY-install shift ****
Can someone who has installed their nismo shift **** give me some help?
I assumed you could just twist the **** off and screw the new one on but the stock one is on there pretty good and Im afraid Im going to damage something if I twist too hard. It seems what ever its screwed on to is twisting with the **** and Im afraid something is going to snap. Can someone give me a heads up on how to do this?
I've searched around but cant seem to find anything to help me out. ( The search engine never gives you anything you are looking for!)
Anyway, thanks in advance!

what year Z do you have? if you own a 2003 (like me) you might need to get the dealer to do it. it was a big ordeal to get it off. they ended up tearing up the **** to get it off.
but ive heard some people with later model years being able to twist it off.
what you need to do is pop that shift boot piece up and vise grip the base of the shifter. with it secure where the shift pole doenst move and twist the shifter off

well to be able to secure the shift pole you need to get under the boot. now i assume since you posted this you tried to do it by hand and had no luck. as long as the pole unver the actual **** doesnt move your fine you can apply as much pressure as needed. and to be honest the shift pole on mine did slighty move but it didnt damage anything.
you dont actually remove the leather boot but the brushed aluminum console piece. i have seen how thw of piece comes off. i know the 03-05 piece just pops up id you grab the inside of the aluminum ring and pull up.

You'll need 2 wrenches since you can't torque the shift **** w/o hurting the transmission. One will go below the shift boot and hold the shaft preventing it from torquing the tranmission, and use a rubber wrench to twist off the stokc shift ****. To take off the console, just curl your hand around the south part of the shift **** boot circle thingy, and pull up. The whole console including the shift boot will come off, revealing the shifter assembly. If you use two wrenchs, it will be alot easier

ok, i just went down and no luck. I stuck my fingers in where the leather and plastic meet and pulled up. The entire piece popped up just a little bit but it seems to be the entire plastic casing that surrounds the shifter but also is the "housing" for the ac kobs. The silver lining is connected to the black plastic or atleast it seems like it. Am i supposed to pull the whole thing off or just keep pulling it up? Am i supposed to just pull the silver plastic lining off?

yeah that whole piece pulls out, there will be a flat connector that goes to the AC/***** dont get that twisted. just pull the consle piece out enough to lay it the the side.
then you should see some cotton pull that down to expose a place to secure the shift poll

you need a RUBBER wrench. a metal wrench will rip ur shift **** apart. Try wrapping the metal wrench w/ a ton of ruber bands or a latex glove and get a TIGHT grip if u dont have a rubber wrench. Its teh same ones they use to install piping for plumbing

I twisted just fine, actually the audio installer twisted it just fine without a huge amount of force and i havent had any tranny problems after a week of driving with it. Mines and 06, he said it was much easier to twist off in comparison to earlier models he said.

I tore the **** out of my oe shift **** and I used a strap wrench on my 03. It was pretty much bonded to the shifter. I braced the shifter at the bottom to avoid damage but that ****.... that poor oe ****.

Wear the thick yellow rubber gloves and try with your hand first, who knows it may come off.
The rubber gripper or vice grip will probably do the most gripping however. Remember, righty tighty, left loosey :-D
