DIY-install shift knob
#121
I did mine over the weekend. Channel locks on both, and a rag over the shift **** to try and protect it. Took a ^*(% load of turns to remove it fully (2006.5), but only slightly scarred the oem ****. About the only damage was stretching of the leather from the torque. It was a bit of a pain, but I'm liking the end results Installed the black aluminum Nismo shift **** in its place.

I dont kno if anyone posted this but if the pole come loose heres what u can do I did mine a long time ago and didnt use anything at first to hold back so then the whole shaft started to spin. After breaking the oe loose with out destroying it I pulled the whole shaft out cause it was already loosening up. I decided to go further and cut mine down I forget how much i took off but use common sense u dont wanna go to low cause then the shift **** will be below the trim and i dont think that is cool .. but who am i .. any way after cutting it I used this stuff called GORILLA GLUE I bought at a local supplier but im sure the depot sells it. That stuff works wonders use a little and it expands something wicked. I promise u it will hold anything tight . Its been 4 years and 2 shift **** mods later and still holding up. So dont sweat it if the **** and the chrome shaft come loose jus gorilla glue that biatch back on n u will roc out. BTW this isnt to promote effing ur car up jus a quick fix if u do mess this up,,and it worked for me. good luck.. happy modding....

replaced the shift **** on my 07. Unsnapped the shift bezel, held onto the lower part of the shifter with a pair of 10" channel-locks, then unscrewed the stock **** by hand. It was on there tight, but with the shaft held in place, the shift **** didn't require a tool to remove.

Here's what I don't understand ('03).
I disconnected the top trim, saw the cotton batting and the rubber boot below it - and that boot is secured to the transmission tunnel with 4 bolts - which I removed. That boot's sleeve extends upwards into the ring and zip ties which secure the leather shift surround. Once the 4 bolts were off, I lifted the boot (it was fused onto the tranny tunnel) a smaller rubber boot was revealed, which can be pushed somewhat down to expose the metal shifter shaft.
It is on that shaft that I locked a vise grip.
It then becomes obvious that there is a PLASTIC sleeve on the metal shaft above that point, over which the upper boot is slid, and - somehow - to which the **** is attached.
They both spin together - but the **** is not unscrewing from the shaft, as the '03 shop manual seems to suggest should be the case.
I then chose to grip to the plastic sleeve with another set of vice grips, and that stopped my ability to turn the **** dead in its tracks.
WTF? I must have rotated the entire assembly (****, surround, boot, plastic sleeve) 15 times, and gotten no where - even though the shifter shaft itself was not turning at all.
WTF am I missing? Is there a fitting within the **** itself which is screwed onto the shaft, and all I've done is (easily) strip that fitting from the surrounding shifter ****?
Pulling my hair out on this.

It came off.
It looks as though the threaded part of the **** is a sleeve within the **** - and you have to PINCH the uppermost part of the thin base (on the leather of the ****) in order to properly transfer clamping force to this inner sleeve - which happens to be where the red loctite is applied.
Otherwise this inner sleeve simply spins inside the **** - and you'd have to destroy the **** to get to it to then remove it.
Annoying.
