Post How to remove Sunglasses case -photos!

So i am currently working on a little project that involved removing the sunglasses case in the headliner. I did alot of searching and people seemed to talk about bits and pieces of how this is done with no photos. If there is one out there i could not find it so I hope this helps others.

I first started by popping off the clear light covers using a small flat head screw driver.

Once you pull one off the center piece and other clear cover is easy to pull off. I then took my screw driver and wedged out the entire light assembly.

The assembly will be connected to a small connector. Simply push down on the tab and pull.

Now this is where it got tricky. I think I did this backwards from the way this should be done but I did do this without causing any damage so ill just show you what i did and you can take it from there.

I slowly started prying the headliner upward in the corner of the assembly. I kinda sounded like i was ripping the headliner so i took it very easy and slow. So as I was prying upward i was pulling down on the assembly and popped out the first hook/tab. After that i just pulled the other two doing the same process.

On the sides in the middle are two rivets that will have to be broken. It may rip the headliner a little bit but its the headliner circles that the rivets go through so it doesnt really matter.

Once you break those off all that is left is two snaps in the back of the assembly. If you pull down hard they will just pop right out. Obviosuly pull straight down with the whole assembly dont pull down on once side or youll break the snaps.

Here is the assembly removed and pictures of the tabs and how they look once removed.

I think this may have been easier if i started from the back but then again you dont have much leverage to pull down and may damage the headliner. Hope this was helpful and keep an eye out for my project in the next day or two with my XM modification/Sunglass case delete.

i am assuming there is not a DIY with pix, because perhaps it is extremely easy to accomplish. Not knocking you down for the effort of doing something like this though.

What is it if i might ask that you are going to be doing? Helicopter style switches? I was watching the original Predator one night and loved how the red lights looked in the cockpit of the helicopter at that time and i had installed low dim leds to accomplish that same look.

Considering everytime i do stuff like this i break things it was not very easy. To do this without damaging my beloved car its good to understand what type of clips or rivets or tabs have this part locked in. Each thread i looked up didnt discribe it very well and didnt help me figure out how to or how not to do this.

As for what I am doing I am cutting out the sunglass case and making a xm onyx radio flush with the case door. I will leave the switches for people with underglow kits lol

i was thinking about that flush look. It may be hard to see the screen. Might think of the idea as well as a push and angle/lock style as well. That would be nice if that were able to be done.

In most cars it would be a little weird over head but luckily in our cars this assembly is slightly slanted so it will make for better viewing. It would be dope if i could devise a tilt system but im not that crafty.

How big is the unit? maybe leave the eye glass case, and just cut out a tight fit for the unit to drop down when its pushed. Assuming there are no wires on the back. You can leave that flush look when it it up and no one will know a thing, till you pop it down.

Its about 5 inches wide. Its not to big it has to go on a cradle as well but luckily it has a lip. So i will only need to expose the radio itself. As for the rest im going to cut out the back of the case as well so the door will still be fully functional if i need to access the back etc.

Thanks for the tips. I've been thinking for a while about putting a Valentine One remote in the flip-down drawer.

I don't have time to search for the exact links at the moment but here is a picture of a setup I saved on my harddrive...
