Default DIY JDM Footwell Illumination

Well I went ahead and installed a DIY JDM footwell Illumination on my 05 350ZR. The way I wired mine up there is no way to turn them on/off manually. They are wired to run exactly like the dome lights on door mode with the timer, there is also no switch to turn them off door mode. However it would be easy enough to wire a small switch in between the LED's and the power source to regain the function of turning them off permanently.

I got these LED's to install under the dash http://www.oznium.com/led-bolt. I used 4 of their "warm white no lense" LED's at $5.99 each this mod can be done for under $30 vs the JDM kit thats about $100 if you can find it. Also these LED's come with the resistors built in so they are plug and play into any 12v source and they are 100% waterproof.

Its pretty straight forward put (2) 5/8th's holes (per side) under the dash and install the LED's as shown below. To remove the bottom panels of the dash just pull there are a bunch of clips and there is one screw located at the bottom corners you need to remove (FSM diagram below shows location of all the bolts and clips for the dashboard).

Now comes the slightly more complicated part. I wired my LED's into the Body Control Module (BCM) Black Connector (there is only one black connector on 05+ going to the BCM) under the driver side finishing panel (see picture below for location). Unplug the battery and when you go to wire the LED's disconnect the black connector from the BCM. Power goes to the Black/Red Wire and the ground goes to the Pink wire (see picture below). Just splice into these wires and solder up your new wires into each one. You will need to extend the wires from the passenger side, I tied both the power wires together to one wire and same with the grounds. I did this so I didnt have to run 4 wires to the driver side I only had to run 2.

Heres a picture of the final result on the driver side (Yes I drive an auto, I'm on air and didnt want to deal with the switches for the air and worry about shifting at the same time).

Here's a way you can make the footwell LEDs mimic the dome lights, and have manual control, too:

Yea I saw that article and considered doing it but I didnt want to have to run the wires through the A pillars and I wanted it to be more true to the way the JDM illumination kit works not like an add on Map light. Instead of wiring it threw the A pillar to get to the map light to use that as the source for power/ground I went directly off of the BCM that controls the Map lights that is located directly next to the pedals under the plastic cover right below the fuse box. I can actually turn off the map lights and just have the footwell lighting illuminate with the doors and they are on the fading timer. So I guess this is just an easier/different way to get a similar result.

Same as having the tire brand in the sig ... None / Looks. Could be handy if there is a rodent in your footwell. No light = bite marks you have to explain. Lights = Truly Nolen I kid I kid

In 40 years of driving I can't recall ever owning a car which didn't have footwell lights. In the case of mine, they're not very bright, match the OEM interior lighting very well, and look just about the same as the OEM footwell lighting in my wife's Acura TL-S. No one has ever gotten into my Z and said "What are those lights?", I guess because they look like they came with the car. Cost me 2 hours if my time and about $12 in parts. But, as with everything, to each his own.

Exactly terrasmak its a JDM only option direct from Nissan. $100 plus shipping from Japan is insane though so I decided to make my own. I did it just to add some dimension to my build, little details add to a car IMO.

Heres the link to the jdm instructions from courtesy nissan

Understand...
I guess they are better than the LED's in the door sills that iluminate when you open the door.
