you know you can use a flat head screw driver instead of the press tool also. it's faster too. basically with the caliper down, take out the outer pad and pry back the piston with the flat head between the rotor and inner pad. it's ok it doesn't damage the rotor cause you're only using the edge of it as a fulcrum to push the old pad back.

you might need to reinsert the old outerpad if you can't push the piston back far enough. i learned this from a dude that used to work at SGP.

Replaced my pads and rotors using this DIY. Took me two hours total (could have done it in one, but with two toddlers roaming, there was always a distraction of one sort or another). The only snag I ran into was the right side rotor did not want to come off. It was rusted on the hub. I used some Lime Away and a couple more whacks with the hammer and it popped off.

Many thanks.

I just did mine over the weekend, front and rear in about 2 hours.. First time I've ever done brakes on a car.

It went extremely smooth. Pads feel great, and no more squeaking

Thanks for the write up!

I looked at my rear pads today, compared to the new Hawks I bought, they have about 50% of the material remaining. This at just under 48k. Is this unusual? I replaced the fronts at 30K with Hawk HPS.

I just tried doing this myself and can't figure out how you guys were able to compress the pistons at all? My brake pads were really worn and the pistons were so far pushed out that it cannot cover over the new thicker pads. When you guys said that you have to drain out some of the excess brake fluid from under the hood, I looked in the brake fluid section, is the reservoir the smaller round one? I drained out all the fluid I can get out of there, but it didn't help with the piston compression. Any help?

I'm no expert, but I think the small round one is the Clutch fluid, and for the piston compression....nothing a C clamp can't handle. Good Luck man!

why would the clutch fluid be connected to the brake caliper? makes no sense...

It isnt, I think he meant this:

"I'm no expert, but I think the small round one is the Clutch fluid.

I'm sure you've done this by now, but make sure you replace any fluids you've drained out.

wat?.....I'm saying you drained your clutch fluid not your brake fluid....the clutch fluid is in the small round one and the brake fluid is in the larger rectangular container.
