Hmmm.....lightly toasted I take it.... ......sounds like you got part way through the bedding process....check out the following:

"A bad smell from the brakes, and even some smoke, is normal....."

The noise problem seems to have cured itself..
Not 100% noiseless, which Hawks even admits but 99% noise free.
I am not sure if somehow I embedded them, or maybe the dealership did and it just took awhile for the pads to wear the coating off.
Regardless, almost noiseless now.

VinUnleaded....glad the noise problem is cured! I really like the Hawks pad, I have noticed a significant reduction in brake dust with them...and no noise.
As far as the bedding process and "smoke"....I took mine out to a deserted road and did 8-10 hard stops.....and there was no question about the smoke!
A guy passed me going in the opposite direction as I was doing one of my last runs.....his eyes about popped out of his head looking at the smoke coming out of all 4 wheel wells
My brakes are perfect now!!!!
jasoni1.......go ahead and "burn 'em in" good!

Guess what?
They squeal!
What gives?
The box even says quiet.
They are not....
I was told this is due to the fact my dealership didnt turn the rotors.
First time ever I havent had rotors turned too...usually a dealership insists on turning them.
Now what? The Nissan dealership says they arent covered under warranty because I supplied them.
A local Z shop told me 2 new pairs, have them reinstalled on turned rotors, and "embedded".
I dont feel like spending all that money over again...guess I will just live with the noise.

Here is few things my mechanic did when installing the Hawk pads.
First, he turned the rotors so they are smooth.
Very Important: second, he did not put the metal shim that goes between the caliper and the brake pads. He said that Hawk pads already come with metal shim on the back of the pads so there is no need for it and he also said that if I want to put the metal shim on he would put it on but it may cause squeel.

I just installed the HAWK pads on my stoptech 14 inch kit, and they are much quiter than my old pads. If mine squeak or squeal at all, i have yet to hear it. Most high performance brake setups, regardless of pad, will squeal some, but these pads on my application have helped a great deal.
