Default Brake Dust Question

I have the standard brakes with 17" wheels. The wheels seem to become coated in brake dust a lot faster than other cars I have owned. Anyone else have this problem?

Well at least I know I'm not the only one. I wonder if it would be as noticable if I upgraded my wheels to something a little more open in design. Like a nice set of 18 or 19" wheels.

I have a track version and my wheels quickly become coated with brake dust. I've thought that the pad material compound on the Z just produces a lot of dust. It seems to hose off easily if I catch it in time.

Would anyone recommend (or not) the spray-on wheel protectants? Are they bad for the clearcoat?

I would NOT recommend the use of these spray-on wheel cleaners or protectants. Wash your wheels in soapy water often to keep them clean. You may wax every once in a while. The clearcoat on your wheels is like the clearcoat on your car.

Just following up on the brake dust issue......I have found a solution.

With OEM brake pads, my wheels were filthy black within a week of washing. In summer 2005, I replaced my OEM pads with Hawk pads. Now, I can go about 3 sometimes 4 weeks before there is any noticeable brake dust.

In theory, I am probably losing some braking power cuz I'm guessing the Hawk pads are harder, but I haven't noticed. I've also been told that the aftermarket pads will wear down my rotor faster. At the last servicing, I specifically asked Nissan to look into these 2 issues and 20,000 kms later, neither pads nor rotor are close to needing replacing. Since the Nissan pads and rotors had to be changed at 30,000 kms, I don't think I'm any worse off with the Hawks.

Performance BMW, Audi, and MB owners would give their right xxx to have such low dusting oem pads as Nissan uses. Easy to tell those without EU performance car experience.

Extra ugly dust is a badge of braking performance, unlike clean bling wheels.

thank you Nissan Rep

A single, 11 mile, mostly freeway drive to work used to cover my wheels in dust, please, Nissan can keep their coal based pads.

I am using EBC Redstuff now, better fade resistance, better pedal feel and virtually 0 dust. The car is dirty before the wheels are.

must be the older zs. I don't get any noticable brake dust on my 07 and I check at least once a week during her 'wipe-down'. I bought ceramic pads for my other car and that solved the dust problem for it.
