Default Need to replace brake pads, but the rotors too?

I took my 04 Z in to Nissan because of a fuel system issue/recall. I was having trouble filling my tank up, sometimes it would stop at 3/4 of a tank.

Anyways the rep told me that I need my front brakes replaced. He said that I need the brake pads AND rotors replaced because they are "sports" brakes. He told me they can't resurface the rotors either and that they needed to be replaced. He quotted me $500!

This is my first time having need the brakes done on my Z (26k miles). Whats really going on here? Do I need to replace my rotors everytime I need new brake pads?

Hmmm..... I don't think that is correct.

I had my pads replaced on my 04.5 and they resurfaced my rotors. Do you have the Brembo brakes ?

Most places refuse to resurface rotors these days. For liability issues as well as for the fact that they can sell you new rotors and make more money.

On a side note, I just replaced all 4 rotors and pads myself for $270 in materials. Took about 2 hours for the full job in 32 degree weather.

I just got my car back. They said I had 2mm left on my front brake pads and 5mm on rears.

$89 for a pair of OEM pads and $130 for each rotor (non-brembo).

I spoke to one of my friends and he said he would help me replace the pads and rotors. He recently replaced his on his WRX.

I saw a "How to" for replacing the pads and rotors for the Z, so that should help also.

Now I'll have to look for some pads/rotors. Any suggestions for normall driving conditions?

I recommend that you inspect the brakes yourself. Is the wear clip inside the pad striking the rotor? No? Then leave the brakes alone.

At about 40k on mine i had to replace my front rotors and all my pads. I waited too long to change my pads though, so thats why i needed new rotors.

EBC rotors are nice, but they make too much noise.
They were suppose to come out with a new model that made less noise.

might want to look them up

Would you say all EBC rotors make too much noise? I'm looking at the EBC Ultimax as an OEM Brembo rotor replacement -- will keep the Brembo calipers & new Brembo pads (or maybe try the EBC redstuff pads?). Anyone use the Ultimax's?

just bought axxis ult pads for the front of mine, and they are perfect, losts of bite when needed and very quiet, a bit on the dusty side but i wash the car every 3 or 4 days anyway so doesn't bother me got them for 83 bucks shipped for the fronts only, took about 20 mins to install if you have the right tools if you are going to replace the rotors go with stop tech or DBA 4000 series plenty of vendors on here, may be a little more than stock, could be a bit less if you look around for them on here, with this you will end up with a brake set up that will be fine for normal driving, but also have the performance should you ever need it, also say you have to make a sudden stop, like i did to miss a red light camera yesterday, with a good pad and rotor setup your going to stop much quicker than a OEM replacement
