So yesterday I heard this dragging sound from my front right tire - more like grinding. so I pulled over and could not find anything, but I looked at the brake pad and noticed a chunk missing. There is no fresh rubbing mark on the rotor near this missing chunk so I don't think that's what I heard, but now I am paranoid about maybe something on the other side (inside pad) that I can't see.
Are these brembo pads prone to breaking, cracking or chunking like this? I only have 13k miles on the car and have the GT with OEM brembos.
I never track the car but I do drive aggressively on occasion. But I rarely get the breaks heated up at all. I don't drive faast ehough to have to stand on the braked before a corner or anything like that.
Oh, and the grinding noise stopped on its own...
I'll be going on a fun-run this weekend and don't want brake trouble! THanks in advance.

i wouldn't doubt if the rubbing stopped when that portion of the pad ripped off entirely and shot out of the wheel lol
I can't say it will give you problems but if that chunk broke off something tells me the rest is going to fail with enough pressure/heat.

Thanks for the quick replies. Should this be a warranty fix? I know break pads are wear items, but this mode of failure is indicative to me of a poor product.
I used to race the 97 M3 and never had a cracked pad on that car in 180,000 miles.

At 13,000 mi, this should definitely be under warranty.
On a side note: The only complaint I have with my factory/stock pads are that they dust really bad. The wheels show dust on them within a couple of miles after a wash. Frustrating.

Thanks all,
I dropped it off at the dealership at lunch. It is an OEM pad. They said if it breaks like that is is a warranty item. They said they don't warranty against wear, but they agree thisis not a wear issue.
I agree it might fail further under more pressure and heat. It freaked me out a little. Prolly would not fail under normal driving, but the nex time I get stupid and really needed them, they might break away more.
Thanks for the advice.

Don't I feel silly...
The pads are OK... They are like that by design. Some pads have a split between the pistons. These are, but the split is corner to corner instead of in half. They showed me some new OEM Brembo pads and sure enough...
Heh.. Oh well. No harm no foul!
They probably have me on "The list" now
