Low Brake fluid. Read your owners manual, it tells you what those annoying warning lights mean.

When you brake hard, the fluid sloshes to the front of the reservior causing a drop in the level causing the float to drop and trigger a low fluid warning. At least that's what's happens in 99% of these cases. If your fluid is above the half-way mark, then you might have some other problem.

Could it be air in the system? Maybe when you get on the brakes you force the fluids through the lines and your reservoir gets low. Then when you get off the brakes the air forces the fluid back into the reservoir.

Air would mean he'd have soft squishy brakes, almost to the point of not being able to stop. With a new setup, surely he'd be concerned if that was the case.

OP when you replaced the brakes, did you allow all the fluid to drain out of the system? How did you bleed after re-filling? Any chance the ABS pump ran dry?

It would still seem like you'd have little or no brakes if there was a problem with the ABS pump or if it wasn't bled properly.
