Default Questions about Koni Yellow Sports.

Hi all,

Sorry if this is a repost, seems like something this would have already been discussed, but I searched everywhere and couldn't find the answers that I was looking for.

Sorry if I'm asking obvious question but I was only introduced to the idea of upgrading my suspension about two weeks ago.

So here goes:

I found a used Koni/Hotchkis combo for a very good price but was worried about a few things.

First off are the Koni's fully adjustable in ride height/dampening etc.

Secondly when I buy coilovers, are buying cambers kits/sway bars a requirement? or can I do without?

Thirdly, how do koni's ride in general in regard to improved ride quality and drop.

I heard that if you were to drop the Z below 1" then you would need cambers but that was for lowering springs and I don't know if that applies for full coilovers.

I also found used Bilstein Pss B14's and am debating which way to go.

Currently I am riding a stock 03 touring and am planning on getting 19" wheels

I DD the car and have no desire to track it, I am pretty much looking for a slight drop (like 1") to eliminate some of the gap, gain an improved ride quality and if possible (probably will be compromised by the improved ride) better handling etc.

Thanks!

Not sure I understand your question(s) but I will try to help.

Koni sport shocks (yellows) are not for adjusting ride height. They work with lowering springs, but it's the springs that set the ride height.

The adjustment on them is for rebound only.

My Koni's greatly improved handling, but not the ride. They are generally A little stiffer than stock. (even on the soft settings)

If you lower the car you *may* not need aftermarket parts for an alignment. Different people seem to get different results, and have different tolerance levels regarding "close enough" when dealing with alignment settings.

I'm lowered about .6" and wouldn't have bothered with aftermarket alignemnt parts if I didn't track my Z. (I got aftermarket A-arms to move my camber even further out of spec than the drop.)

I have no experience with the Bilstein Pss B14's on a Z (that I can remember), but I did upgrade our Magnum RT to Bilstein shocks and they actually ride better than stock. (They didn't improve handling on that car as much as the Koni's improved my Z's handling though)

Very generally speaking, twin tube "sport" shocks (Koni yellows) ride like poo on the street. I can tell you my car rides better with 900lb springs on monotube motons than it did with DA Koni's on 400lb springs.

As far as the Koni's go, read the post above me hes got it bang on. But your more than likely gonna need a Camber kit and at the very least a rear camber kit. Fronts are hit and miss. But i would STRONGLY suggest getting a rear camber kit once you decide on springs/coilovers just to be safe. Theyre a pretty inexpensive part to be honest (compared to whats out there) so just do it right the first time bud. Oh and PLEASE dont go with Ichiba, there suspension parts are hot garbage...trust me...i say this from experience...
The guy i'm getting the b14's off of told me to wait til the coils are on the car before considering cambers. I'm more of a DD driver so not likely to to lower more than 1" well not planning to anyways. He also suggested I get SPC or SPL which I think is pretty sound. Haha yeeeeup Vancity is quite an awesome place to live! Why are rear camber arms so much cheaper than fronts lol. =P

Perfect just what I needed to know. More going for something that can lower my car and give me a "good" ride.
Thanks!

Thanks for the response! Yeah I'm having some trouble finding some reviews of b14's on Z's. But they are Bilstein's haha. I kinda feel like its going to be wasted on a dd driver like me but the price is so close to tein basics... I thought might as well.. =P. They also come with hypercoil springs that are apparently an upgrade. Anyone heard of the brand? and good?

If your getting rears either get the SPL's, which are prices but WELL worth the money from what ive seen, or get something with a little better history such as Eibach. Alot of cheap-o chinese knock off are out there and they cant handle what they say they can handle and its been kknown to cause problems for alot of people. Oh and you should join niclub. Its pretty much a canadian nissan/infiniti forum and alot of the members are from Van. They have meets and cruise out to revscene meets together and whatnot.

Haha yeah was told the same for niclub by someone on revscene.
As long as I don't go more than 1" I "should" be fine right?

Rear camber arms are more straight-forward (simple) than the fronts.

Mhm understood. Grateful for the informed advice. I'm going from 18's to oem g35 19's. Do you think I should also invest in front camber arms? and I was looking at spc rear cambers, thoughts?

Im on s-techs and hps and I needed the rear kit, front would not be a bad idea, but its up to you, I have abut -1.5 all around with exception of the RF which was wrecked by the previous owner. I had Ichiba arms in the front but it did not have the adjust-ability I though they would, the tires wear so slow on the front they cup first anyway...
band for buck, I just switched to SPC rear...here is why...
