Default Z and gas prices

Today on the way home from lunch with 3 co-workers in a ford expedition. We stopped to get gas and the price was 1.99 for regular and 2.17 for premium. I made a comment that my car only took premium and my co workers started ragging on me about how unpractical my car is (the other 2 guys drive 2 seater pickup trucks and they never put anything in the bed... about as practical as a 2 seater Z IMHO). They were saying they would never buy a car that required premium gas and that its such a waste... I then noticed the expeditions computer was showing 12 miles per gallon... at 1.99 thats almost $.17 a mile !!!... I sit around 18 or 19 which gives me $.12 a mile (with 93oct)... one guy was claiming his pick up gets about 15 but thats still $.13 a mile (with regular)... so I don't feel so bad about paying a little more for premium now.

I bet 87 octane in the Z would drop you 2 miles per gallon at least negating any advantage of using it. Not to mention your car would be slower... juk

Yeah, I'm paying 2.35 in NY right now, but I drive my corolla most days, so it's OK. Suggestion: Get a 4 cyl beater car, corolla, civic, etc for cheap and drive that to save on gas and keep the miles low on the Z. I paid 1500 for my 95 rolla and it gets insane gas mileage and NEVER premium gas. It paid for itself already.

Owning 2 cars not an option for me b/c insurance for under 25 is psycho when you add a second car.

But I only drive about 10 to 12k miles a year so I am only spending $54 more a month for my Z's gas vs something that got 30 mpg on regular. There are many reasons I want a second car... but gas isn't a major one it would just be a nice side effect to offset the extra cost of insurance and maintance.

There's a Shell station here in San Francisco that has 2.75 for 91!!! Luckily I found a Chevron for 2.44.

The problem is demand is high for oil and there isn't an increase in production. Oil futures closed today at a new high... $56.46

Ouch, its nowhere near that high here in good ol' fort wayne, I think it's around 2.13 now. I also get 20 mpg on my Z driving all city, so I don't think that's bad at all.

Gas in Jersey just went up recently... on my home last night, saw Premium for $2.07. A week ago it was around $1.97 for premium.

I pay about 2.10 as of last week when I filled up. I tend to average about 24 mpg.

Hmm if I had another car that got 30 mpg that would give me an extra 6 x 20 = 120 miles per fillup. So at 20 gallons that would put me 4 gallons ahead of the Z per fillup which is about 8 bucks. So my 2nd car at 600 miles per tank at a rate of 50 miles round trip per day would last me 12 work days. So 12 work days for about 40 bucks.

My Z gets about 480 miles per tank for about 9.6 workdays of driving.

1050 miles per week

Z= 1050miles per month /24mpg= 43.75 gallons needed at 2.10 a gallon = 91.875 bucks

2nd car = 1050miles per month /30mpg= 35 gallons needed at 1.90 a gallon = 66.5 bucks

91.88 - 66.5 = 25.38 savings per month for buying another car. $304.56 per year.

Then there's added insurance cost, but then I'd have a lot less miles on my Z.

Man I just wasted too much time on that...

Yep my car is a gas "guzzler", thus the reason for the $1000+ gas guzzler tax the orginal owner had to pay. My tank is smaller than the 350Z so that will make up for a little.
