Anyone Buy a Z lately? (Past week or so?)
What you pay depends which model year you get and sometimes whether you are buying a car on the lot or ordering.
I just bought an '06 Z for about invoice. Some general tips.
1) Bargain from the invoice price up. NOT the MSRP down. General rule for all latest model year cars.
2) For an '06 Z, pay no more than $500 over invoice. That is, the trim level invoice plus the invoice prices of all options plus $500. You can generally do better than $500 over but that is a good cutoff amount. Never use the MSRP prices for anything.
3) For an '05 Z, you should definitely get it for less than invoice. Not sure how much since I didn't research this specifically but would imagine pay no more than $1k UNDER the invoice.
4) Sometimes it is easier to get a good deal on a car that you order than one on the lot.
5) If you can't do as well as above, shop around!

I'm not in the auto sales business but the more I research it for buying purposes the more I realize that this is true.
It also helps to know what you should pay. Like, I see alot of people here buying '05 Zs at invoice thinking it's a good deal. For an '05 at this point you should be getting a lot LESS than invoice. It's the new '06s that should just be at or marginally above invoice.
Research and information is key!

The profit is already built into the invoice, direct from the factory, and if you get a car for invoice, the profit for the dealer and the salesman is usually not much. At least, not much on the front. The back depends on your credit and whether you buy extended warranties etc.
Believe it or not, most salespersons are humans, and they have to eat too. There is not nearly as much money in selling new cars as some might lead you to think.
The reality of the situation is that unless you are paying over factory sticker price, you aren't really getting screwed badly at all. The place customers really get screwed, and are usually too stupid/uneducated to realize it, is on the back end, not the front, which is where salesmen make the majority of their income.

MSRP prices are irrelevent. Do not use them for anything--the car or options.
Work from invoice but take into account the model year and time of year.

Question: If you get a car under invoice, how does the dealer make money?? I work for a company that offers VPP ( See details below). I want to get a Z base. Am I better off using VPP or negotiating with the dealer??? ----------------------------------------
Dealer invoice
Minus VPP discount (Nissan 2.87% : Infiniti 1.65%)
Plus dealer added options, Security Plus, etc.
Plus 2.5% delivery fee of dealer invoice after VPP discount has been subtracted
Plus destination and handling charge
Minus applicable incentives
Equals paticipant's purchase price

Sounds like VPP will get you to right around invoice after you take away 2.87% and re-add the 2.5% ... do you know if this is VPP A or B? I think they have two programs? You can always just call and ask for a price, see what they offer ... you can figure out invoice on your own via any number of sources (edmunds, carsdirect, etc). I'm guessing that VPP will be easier and quicker though.

Anyone have any VPP experience to throw into the mix?
Fwiw, I ordered out an 06 Touring coupe (with everything except AT, but including IF color) about 3 weeks ago and paid $25 under invoice. I opened with $300 under invoice, they countered with $500 over. My next was the twenty five bucks under offer (with free install of a nismo exhaust, should I decide to buy a floor example they want to move for $1,000) and they took it. From experience, you usually need more than two offers on each side, so I'm thinking I had a bit more room under invoice.

All that's left to do now is cross the days-till-delivery off my calendar
