Default Order vs. Buying right there- any difference on price?

So I've done a little over a year of research and I'm about ready to go buy a 2006 Touring 6MT, but I also am picky about the colors: Black exterior, burnt orange interior. Probably don't care about the options, except the side air bags.

I've called several dealerships in the bay area, both in Nov. 2005 and now, March 2006, and they always say it's hard to find such a color match and they go dull on my when I've shown that I won't settle for anything else. I even ask if I can order through them and wait the 2-3months, but they're ready to hang up the phone. What gives?

1) Am I expected to pay more, if I am doing an order, or should it have no effect? How are dealer holdbacks, destination charge, etc, affected in the price?

2) Do dealerships have less incentive to sell a car when it is an order? And how should I approach that.

And if anyone can find this car in those exact specs on the West coast, let me know, please. Appreciate everyone that's read this, Thanks.

From my recent experience, you can get a better deal on a car that is sitting in the lot. Dealers will prefer to move those vehicles so they will be able a little more flexible on the price.

usually if you order the car, you will pay sticker for it. they wont negotiate on a car that they dont already have sitting on their lot.

I ordered a 2006 touring, silverstone with charcoal interior (I ordered burnt orange interior but they call me back and said it would take an extra month or so to get the orange interior so I told them to change it to charcoal, I was bach and forth on interior color anyway). I ordered mine with navigation and side air bags. I was able to negotiate price down to $250 over invoice and they wouldnt go any lower on ordering one. So yes you can negotiate. My negotiation went very smooth and only took a few minutes. Will be here around the end of May.

Other members will disagree but I say yes, buying on the spot is better.

Dealers can only stock so many cars and profit from turnover: if the car sits it costs money. Find the car you want, study the pricing, visit and make your best offer.

Question

So did you order a 350Z or buy one off the lot?

I just ordered mine today. Luckily, the dealer already had a ppw 3 weeks into production that hadn't been painted yet. They were able to change it to silverstone w/ burnt orange interior. They searched all incoming Z's coming to the state of Florida in the next few months and there was nothing that matched what I was looking for.

I feel I got a great deal on my special order Z...
Siverstone, Touring, NAVI, 6 speed, Burn orange interior, Floor mats, trunk mat, aluminum kick plates, splash guards.
MSRP: 35,885
Invoice: 33,019
My price: 32,812

My wait time, since it had already started production, will be a little less. But it'll still be a long 2 months.
