Default Help, Just got back from the dealer. Did I negociate well?

First, I went in and test drove a base.
Second, I sat down and they asked me questions on what I was looking for.
Third, they did a credit check on me.
Forth, As the credit check was going through they appraise my trade-in and offer me $400 over invoice for the 350z. The invoice on the base is $25,800 + floor mats, destination charge, cargo nets and some other nicknacks. so the total comes out to $27,100.
Fith, my credit goes through ok and they offer $4,000 for my trade-in. I argue with them that its too low so they bump it up to $5000. Edmunds lists my trade-in at least $7000 in good condition.

I think the price is too high. I told them I didnt want the floor mats and all the other stuff in it. They told me that it came that way from the factory, that they didnt put the extras on, thus it has to be sold with the car. In the end they wouldnt budge on lowering the price. They say the car moves fast so I'm already getting a good deal.

What do you guys think? I should get a better deal since the 07s are coming out mid december right???? Did you guys pay destination charge???

You know how they get you? Your trade, sell your trade privately.

Default trying to do better risks losing the car

If you really want the car and you can afford it, don't worry about how the deal looks compared to the best anybody ever got. You'll drive yourself nuts if you compare everything you have to what others have. You don't say what your trade is so we don't know how saleable it is - but selling a car privately so you can buy a new one can also be a pain. You save sales tax on the value of your trade, too - so if state tax is 6% you can add $300 to the $5k they'd give you for your trade.

I got about the same deal on my '06 Enthusiast. They're right that the cars move fast. My dealer had a leftover '05 Touring, a used '06 Touring (with 900 miles on it), and the new '06 Enthusiast that I bought. The other dealer close to me (where I got our Xterra last year and to whom I went first) had one new roadster. Of course, the sales manager told me he could get me anything I wanted within a few days, but that turned out not to be true. He couldn't get me any coupe. The loaded ones can sit for months, like the '05 Touring with a list price north of $38k. But the base cars fly out the door, at least in the northeast.

Once you get to this point in the negotiations, you risk losing the car over a small amount of money. Every day the car sits on the lot, the risk increases that someone else will buy it while the odds increase that your cost would drop if you took it. When I reach this point, I decide how much I really want the car. Then I figure out the most I can afford to spend. These two facts lead to a "best and final offer" - and most dealers have taken it when I was at all reasonable (I've been buying cars for a few decades).

Sometimes you're in there on a lark and you know you'll walk if the price isn't once-in-a-lifetime low. But if you really want this car, $1000 over 4 years is less than $20 a month. Avoiding the time and distance factors in finding another one were worth it to me. I knew what I could afford so I offerred it. Of course, I had to listen for 20 minutes to "I'm losing money on the car at that price", which I knew wasn't true because "invoice" isn't the actual price the dealer pays -the real dealer cost is called "tissue" because it used to be on an "onion-skin" copy of the invoice that was removed so the dealer could show you an invoice withut revealing his actual cost. Tissue price reflects the advertising hold-backs and other hidden reductions in the price the dealer pays. I drove out with the car 90 minutes after I arrived for the first time.

Except for an Audi dealer who took the mags off a new '78 5000 sedan and gave me steelies (I used them for snows and put aftermarket mags on it), I've never heard of a dealer who'd remove anything that was on the Monroney sticker from a new car. I've gotten some stuff free that I didn't want, but no dealer ever took it off the car. And the destination charge has always been figured in the price on way or another - I've never gotten that one dropped.

Always work each transaction separately. The common scam is, dealers offer you a sweet deal on the new car, but rip you off on the old car telling you it isn't worth that much, they'll have to put money into it to sell it to someone else etc etc. Cry me a river basically. So just get the best deal you can on a new car, then either sell the old car private or to some place like Carmax who will rip you off a little less than a dealership.

Be sure you know your trades wholesale or trade in value. Typically that's what a dealer goes by, not the retail value. If they are saying you are getting the new car close to invoice, it's likely you are getting wholesale not retail. Which is reasonable imo. Use the internet and educate yourself of the pricing info out there. These are cars that sell themselves, so keep that in mond. As far as I know there is no significant changes to the 07's.

As mentioned before sell privately.
The dealer I went to offered me $3,000 for my trade in and told me I could get double that if I sold it privately so I did.....for $8,500

I would consider a whole new engine a significant change. The O7s are getting the new VQ35HR. I myself am waiting till spring to pick up mine.
I can't wait to see the new colors. I'm hoping for a charcoal gray!

"The 2007 Nissan 350Z is scheduled to go on sale in January 2007. The changes for the new model year will include new exterior colors, a new gray colored convertible top (Roadster models), Active Head Restraints and performance enhancements including a new VQ35HR engine.

The 2007 350Z will again be available in Coupe and Roadster body styles and in an array of models – five for the Coupe, including a Grand Touring model, and three for the Roadster (including the Grand Touring automatic transmission version)." SOurce = Nissan.

I knew that, but it's only like 6 more horsepower and the weight or mpg hasn't changed appreciably. So I don't find that significant. I do know the background on the change.

sell car privately and you should negotiate more or go to another dealer, you can get a better deal, unless you really dont car than just do it, you will still be happy with the Z.. i got my 05 last year right when the 06s were coming out and got it for like $50 over invoice, didnt pay for destination or vin etching or any of that bs..BUT i still would have taken it even if they did make me pay for those little extras, i have no patience..

First you do not have a deal because you have no contract. Only word of mouth.
Second I cant tell jack without the MSRP.

we are expecting the extra rpms to be able to put the Z in sub 5 second 0-60 stock. also there are rumors about how the internals should be stronger for FI. I think thats significant enough.

If that is true (the sub 5 sec 0-60), I agree. That's significant. Car and driver tested a new G35 with the new engine. They state 0-60 of 5.2 sec vs 5.7 on the previous version. Reality? We'll see.

same here....the mercedes dealer offered only 3500$ for my trade. So i took it to a consignment dealer and they sold it within two weeks for 8900$. The poor guy who bought it also got an extended warranty and his total cost was over 11k. He could have bought it from me for 7500$ when it was in the local papers.
