Default your thoughts on ordering a car?

come september i plan on being in a new 350. i currently am a 5 year subaru driver and my wife is getting a forester so its time for me to get something "different" to drive. i drove a 350 and fell in love. what a great car!

i talked to the salesman and sales manager and played the "hardass" and they said they would sell me a car for a few hundred over invoice. im happy with that.

now, all i want is a "stripped down" white enthus. model. no options. and i want it with no miles. i dont want anyone else to have taken my car out and driven it like you are not suppose to drive the car during break-in.

how many of you guys have ordered a car and had to wait for it? the dealer said it would be about a 3 month wait. im ok with that... i can put my order in at the end of july and the car should be in towards the end of september.

im wary of the dealer trying to pull some crap with me when the car comes in though. ive been waiting 3 months for my car, now its in... now they can screw me around some and ill be more proned to take it because i just want my car. im not signing anything though till i can look at the car, so having a solid, concrete deal before the car gets here is not really an option.

opinions?
TIA.

Looks to me like you already answred your own question. If you don't sign a contract in advance, then you obviously don't have "...a solid, concrete deal" .

And frankly, I doubt if dealership is going to special order a car without a contract. If you're not willing to commit, why should they.

I'm a builder. That would be like a buyer asking me to build a custom home to their specification, then if 1) they don't change their mind, 2) they like it, and 3) I'm willing to accept their offer, they might buy it when iots finished. Ain't gona happen.

I am not sure when they will stop taking orders for the 2007 but surely by July you should be ok.

I don't think there is any "gotcha" with ordering one but it still might have a mile on it or two because they do get moved around after they get built.

When it shows up check it out just like you would any other new car. It has been a long way from Japan to end up at the dealer and might have some blemishes on it.

If you are going to wait till sept though maybe you should wait to see what is coming for 2008.

I would assume he would have to put some no refundable deposit down on it.

In Cali at least when you order a car you can change your mind at any time before taking delivery of the car and dealership HAS to refund any money placed on deposit. Don't know about Texas.

3 months sounds about right. Enthusiast is good choice. Always risk but I say go for it. But do find out about state law on cancelling.

My store doesn't do special orders.

Nissan can be spotty about getting them accomplished as expected, and also for the low mileage 350Z folks, Nissan randomly tests cars before delivery, and they infrequently arrive with 30-50 miles off the truck.

Lesson learned for everyone after having a couple 4-month long waiting ordeals end in tears. There are dealers that will do them, and there's a good chance it will go as expected. YMMV.

My suggestion is that you go negotiate a favorable deal on something in-stock, and enjoy your sports car for the summer. Having done Nissan for a bit, I've sold a couple 350Zs with 500-700 *test drive* miles, and countless with 12-200. Nothing bad has ever come of it.

thanks guys.

ive always bought off the lot or had a car sent from another lot. 2 cars ago i signed the dotted line before the car was at the dealer, and it got there and after i told them i wanted it trailered there they decided to have it driven to the lot. that added an extra 70 miles to the car.

i didnt know if a dealer would order a car before i sign for it or what... never done that and i dont know what the "etiquette" is.

Ordering a car is no different than buying one off the lot.

Study 350Z prices.
Make your best offer.

Get a contract in writing.
Include a cancel stipulation: If vehicle is not delivered on or before blank, this contact is void. Deposit will be returned within 24 hours.

The experience however, of buying off a lot probably will vary from ordering. But the car will be the same if it hasn't been a demo.

I end up ordering simply because I'm picky about what I want and that usually isn't available. It is easier to get invoice plus prices too as they don't have something in front of you to entice you.

Yes, you will have to wait about 3 months unless they do a dealer trade. If miles are important, tell them that. Mine came off the truck with 12 miles on the ode. In this state you can get your deposit back too, but they don't advertise that.

I ordered my 07 in Jan. It took exactly 10 weeks.
I ordered it over the phone and used a credit card for a deposit. No contract.
