Dealer Auctions
Anyone ever bought a Z from a dealer auction? We have a family friend who is a dealer and can get us into auctions. Are they really that much cheaper? Any info on them would be great (yes I know I've searched online for info about them, just wanted to hear from you all ).
I know dealers need to make their money somehow, so generally how much are the markups (essentially how much I'd save)? I know it's a general question, but is there a certain % they mark them up by? For example, my budget is around 12k-14k total. I'm really looking for a clean title 6mt in good condition, think it's possible?

Dealer auctions are for dealers. You cannot get a bidding number unlesss you are a dealer. Dealers do OK at auctions because they are, well, professionals. They know cars and the market well.

I actually bought my previous 03 g35 coupe there about a year ago in Adesa and I gotta say, it gave me a lot of problems. I ended up selling it cause I didn't wanna deal with it anymore. I also know a lot of people that have gotten very reliable cars as well. They usually have lists up before the sale and the full VIN's are on there for you to CarFax. Do your research and then check out the car in its entirety.
You could check out the car before you buy. You just gotta find it in the auction's lot which is usually seperated by lane number and run numbers. Also, you don't need to have your dealer friend buy it for you blind. You can get into the auction with him as a driver and give him like a $200 to $300 commission. That's how we do it here in NJ and I'm pretty sure that's how they do it in all the other manheims too.
Another tip I want to give you is to buy cars that are being sold by finance companies rather than dealer consignments. Dealers usually sell cars in these auctions because they can't sell them on the street due to various reasons. Finance companies on the other hand usually have repos that are for sale and are in pretty much sound condition.

The reason cars at auction are cheaper is because they are the ones the dealerships got on trade in and are trying to get rid of!
They only take cars there if they're in bad shape, or have tons of miles, or have problems. They'd never take a good condition, low mileage car that runs well to auction.
That's why all those "Used car lots" have all the cheap cars is because they all came from auction..........FROM the dealerships, because they didn't want them.

a new cadillac dealership isnt going to want to sell a 170K mile 350Z on their lot (this was me), so they auction it off.
if the car has almost any visual damage, the dealerships will send it to auctions.
if the tires are dont have enough tread (dealerships are required to have a certain amount of tread on their used cars, basically what passes inspection) they'll sell it because putting on a new set of tires would make the profit negligible
so a perfect 2004 car could go to auction with a dent on the hood because a lexus dealership doesnt want that on their lot. and over a certain age, most lots wont even touch
