Default Covering deep scratches..

Hey guys,

I got some scratches on my hood and inbetween the hood and the fender that are pretty much down to the paint (got keyed). My touchup paint isn't coming until Tuesday even with 2 day shipping and it's going to snow tomorrow and Monday. I have no other method of transportation to work and my car doesn't fit in my garage, what kind of preventative measures can I take to make sure this doesn't rust on me before I touch it up?

Thanks!
Shane

Either clean out the garage where it will fit, or put some silicone over it. It might look tacky, but it is for only a few days, and the water won't get to it.

I would go with some painter's tape. It won't damage your paint, and even though it'll look tacky it'll protect the scratches.

so you mean "down to the metal" ? if your interested email or PM me i have a great link to a professional detailers website where he discusses the procedure to filling in deep scraches to look like new again. it will include primer, touch up paint, fine cut polish & wax...the basic essentials at a low cost compared to a body shop......i have to say that touch up paint alone wont work very well. the scratch may be filled but it will be extremely obvious....best of luck to you!

Bought some painters tape and taped up the metal exposed parts as best as I could.

I was gonna get the touchup paint til I can afford getting it professionally repaired. I might just leave the painters tape on til then rather than touching it up.

Myz, i'll shoot ya a PM. that would be great

Hey Deceit ............... Painter's tape will trap mosture, thus causing rust. Just lay a heavy coat of clear vasoline on the damaged area. That should keep the mosture out and provide temporary protection.

Technically, it won't rust, but it will corrode, which is the same thing, just different materials. Whatever is used, make sure it won't put anything in the surrounding paint that will keep the new paint from bonding to it.

Bare aluminum will oxidize! It is truly not the same as rusting (Fe & O2) or corrosion (acidic rxn). If it only sits for a few days you should have no major problems and if it does oxidize it will look like a black film over the scratch (most likely but not always). If you guys have ever sat on an aluminum bench in the summer (when you get a sweaty butt) you will notice a black color on your pants which is caused by the oxidation of the metal from the moisture of your ***!! haha
