I beat them (Swirls, Scratches)
Hi Guys, I also have a Black BMW and I just recently paid a detail shop $200 to polish it and get the swirls out. I tried everything to get them out myself to no avail. Anyway I brought the car home and it was looking real good. The day after there was a dust storm here and the car was filthy. I was going to was it, so I sprayed it down with water, but something came up and I just left. The next day I saw all kinds of hard water spots. I was inpossible to get them out. I tried every remedy known.... vinegar.
These things was eched into the clearcoat. I had to get the car polished again. I had a crazy thought that I could do this myself. I didn't want to pay these guys $200 of more to do it. I went and bought a Crafsman ploisher from Sears and went at it with the pads it came with. I didn't know what the hell I was doing. I made it worst than it was Scratches eveywhere. I wanted to cry.
I got back on the internet and found a video on youtube that showed you how to get swirls and scratches out. I was using the wrong pad and technique. I went to the store and bought a foam pad and applied the proper technique. All I and say is I'm never taking my car to a detailer ever again. I love to detail cars, but black is sooooo hard to do it right. I hope this can help someone here. It's not real hard, it just take some time. The link is below. Good luck....db

I forgot to mention my own "DIY":
Here's what you need in order to polish/wax a car with a ROB.
1) Porter-Cable 7336SP
2) 6" Velcro backing plate: http://www.topoftheline.com/porcabvelpad.html
3) 7½" Lake Country VC foam polishing pads: http://www.topoftheline.com/7durvelpad.html
I use the Yellow, White and Black pads. You'll probably want two, maybe three of each.
4) Polishes: I use 3M Medium Cut Rubbing Compound (39001); 3M Swirl Mark Remover (39009); Zaino Z-PC Polish/Cleaner.
The compound is for removing moderate scratches, deposits on paint, rough spots, etc.
The SMR is for removing swirl marks, hazing caused by the compound or other polishes.
The Z-PC is for use in place of the SMR on a Zainoed car.
5) Helpful instructions on how to use the Porter-Cable:

The P-C can be bought at Lowes for $109. The backing plate and pads come from www.TopOfTheLine.com. The 3M products I get from a local CarQuest Paint Store. It's a special version of a CarQuest parts store that sells professional paint supplies and equipment. The 3M products are pretty widely available in any case.

This guy Mike Phillips from Meguiarsonline.com forums........ lots of pics and videos online where he explains how to correctly wash and polish a car.
it's not hard, but you could literally take a week to do a car RIGHT from start to finish.
