Default Steering Wheel Cover Corrosion

What's up with the ugly black fuzz that appears on the so-called brushed aluminum steering wheel covers? The dealer tells me these cannot be replaced without replacing the entire steering wheel(which he refuses to do!). Can this grime be removed without removing the clear coat and/or rubbing out the cruise control lettering on the right side? This really bothers me on a 35K car.

Colour me blonde, but what do you mean? Is there discolouration on the aluminum or on the leather?

Default steering wheel overlay discoloration

I will try to post pics, but the discoloration(black fuzz) is on the aluminum overlays. Hasn't anyone experienced this as yet?If I use any effective cleaner,
it also removes the clearcoat.

Default Steering wheel fuzz

I experienced the same issue, the material breaks down from the oils in your hands. According to the dealer only some our chemistries cause this issue, lucky us. This stuff gets all over my pants when I get in and out of the car. I suspect the answer is to get a steering wheel cover, hopefully there is one out there that doesn't look 70's cheesy.

welcome to my world. it's very common for this.

the clear coat on the plastic peices painted to look like brushed aluminum react with the oils in your hand and turns brittle and rough and starts to peel off.

get a new wheel... nothing to be done. overlays, etc is possible.

The Wheelskins look halfway decent at least from the picture.

I bought the carbon fiber covers from the Z store! they needed some finessing to get them looking good and a couple of extra pieces of CF I had lying around.
Prior to that I thought about nail polish remover and just taking the clear off.

Just my $0.02
