How did my paint become wavy?!
I was washing my car the other day when I noticed something strange on my driver side door. Right below the mirror, the paint had waves in it. I buffed and buffed till my arms were dead and they were still there.
The door has never been hit or repainted and anyone with a trained eye would look at the door and assume that the door was hit and repainted badly. So has this phenomenon happened to anyone else? Has anyone else had waves mysteriously appear in their paint?

It sounds like a really bad buff job. Sometimes I see brand new mercedes in Chicago, black esp. that show these terrible buffing techniques that result in "waves" or like "dremel-like" shapes. This usu. is from the improper use of a rotary buffer. You can always try to get it out with a safe buffer like the porter cable. That kind of sounds like your car? Pics?

Manufacturer's faulty paint job?!! What year's your beast? If it's still under warranty, you COULD try the stealership. Just be psychologically prepared for all kindsa alibis! IF so, try the BBB.

It's an 03 so it's way out of warranty. As far as I know, a rotary buffer has never been used on the car and yes, I may be a victim of Nissan's wonderful QC re: automotive paint.
I'll try to post pics later.

can't say without pics, but it is most likely one of these:
1. rotary holograms. perhaps you had the car in for maintenance and the dealership scratched up the side of your car...so they "detailed" it quick for you to hide/remove the light scratches. blind monkeys do a better job with a rotary than dealership "detailers", unfortunately.
2. orange peel. very common and you may just be noticing it now.
of course, when you say you "buffed and buffed" on that area, you probably added more swirls and scratches than you took out.
