Default Leather Care

Found this detailing article:
Here’s how to find out if your leather is clearcoated: Take a white rag, and spray a spritz of Simple Green, Castrol Super Clean, 409 or equivalent on it, and go to an inconspicuous place on one of the seats. The hidden part between the backrest and seat cushion is a good spot. Rub the rag and cleaner on a small spot there. If you see the color of the leather coming off on the rag, you DON’T have clearcoated. If you don’t see color/dye on the rag, the it IS coated. If you do have coated leather, you can safely use a PDMS silicone product such as the 303 or Vinylex , which also has cleaners in it, to keep it supple and add UV protection. If it’s uncoated, go with your favorite leather dressing-cleaner and conditioner combo. The latter is best applied with your hand, and allowed to sit a few minutes. After about 5 minutes, the leather will have absorbed all the conditioner it’s going to, so you then want to just wipe/buff the excess off with a white cotton rag/towel.

Does anybody know if our leather has a clearcoat? Sorry if this has been asked before. Search was taking too long to load.

What a freakin idiot. Do you not understand what you read? What I'm asking is whether or not we can use 303 or silicone based products on the leather seats, ie., are they clearcoated or not.

i think what keo is trying to say is that if the leather seats are coated, the lether cleaner/conditioner is not getting to the leather. therefore it is not doing anything. if its coated with a plastic, then a vinyl cleaner/condtioner would be more appropriate.
nonetheless, i used lexol leather products, but dont know if its doing anything. when i use the stuff on my lexus, i can tell it feels better, but on the z

ok...my point since you don't see it is that...unless your seats are really soiled (ie blood stained or any other bodily fluid stained)...why take a chance with something really harsh (ie 409, simple green, engine degreaser etc)....I believe that a good leather cleaner & conditioner should be fine for maintaining your leather clearcoated or not....hell meguairs leather wipes do a great job for the the steering wheel and shift **** on my Z...but again i'm not trying to clean the DNA off of them either

I understand your point. But you still don't get mine. I'm not looking for a CLEANER. I repeat, I'm not looking for a CLEANER! All I want to do is protect. If the seats are clearcoated, then it's possible and probably a wiser choice to protect with 303. Please don't reply anymore. You're making my head hurt.

hey since they could be clearcoated why don't you use some shoe polish on it...them maybe you could tell sh*t from shinola

http://www.pottymouth.org/humor/shinola.html

maybe thats what your trying to clean from your seats!! or maybe protect from your seats! one would think that a leather conditioner would/should/does help "protect" from further "accidents"

mrZeee...enough already. All the guy wants to know is if the Z's leather seats are clear-coated. Your remarks are unwarranted.
