Default Shooting for the 12s didn't go so well....PICS

So I headed to the track today....in hopes of breaking into the 12s N/A with the help of some M/T ET Streets...
icks
First pass, I didn't really warm up the slicks. Bogged my launch and short shifted my way down the track to a 13.65@101.5mph with a 2.01 60'....this was my first launch ever on these tires,so I took it easy. I knew the car had LOTS more 60' and trap in it.

Second "attempted" pass. Did a small second gear burnout and heated up the slicks a good bit. Then as I was attempting to stage I had my revs around 4 grand (don't ask me why) and my foot slipped off the clutch (effectively sidestepped the clutch with warm slicks) and POP...I snapped my passenger side drive shaft...fanastic...

here are the pics of the driveshaft in two and the car getting put on the tow truck at the gas station that I managed to limp it to...THANK GOD FOR THE VLSD diff or the car wouldn't have MOVED by itself. As it was it barely moved...

sheared cleanly apart

my baby being put on the tow truck..thanks AAA for the free 60 mile tow!!!

Oh man Im sorry to hear this. This is my worst fear when I launch on the slicks. I just cant see me pulling a 1.7 60ft and slipping the clutch. IMO its gotta be mostly a drop. Are you going to upgrade your axles now? Sorry to hear of this, you have a great shot at hitting 12's n/a. Good luck.

because it was really my own lack of corrdination that broke it. When I go back to the track I'll be very aware of how my foot is positioned on the clutch. Plus, the axle is VERY easy and cheap to replace...other drivetrain components ARE NOT. If I beef up the axles...then something else will likely break as it becomes the "weakest link"...rear end, first gear, clutch, driveshaft...etc. I'd much rather replace an axle every once in a while over any of the other things.

That looks like what happens to STi axles...shears right off near (or in) the CV boot. That has got to suck...good luck with the repair.

I totally can...VERY smart from an engineering standpoint...make the weakest part of the drivetrain the easiest and cheapest to replace.

Furthermore they really aren't THAT weak..guys have consistantly pulled 1.7 60's without breaking them..and that's pretty decent.

Repair is a snap...had the old one off in 20 minutes...will try to find a new one tomorrow

Next time I'll just bring extra axles to the track in case I break one :P

Ouch, $hit happens to the best of em'....good luck on finding a cheap replacement, when you get a price could you post it in here, Im curious as well as to how much it is. I dont know if you would want to run a used axle, but if you do or want a cheap replacement, try www.car-parts.com Ive gotten transmissions off here they are pretty cheap, and you can always talk them down in price.

Edit-cheapest I found was $65, lol I may just buy a set of used axles and go to the track on the slicks and go crazy off the line Pretty cheap....

Wow $65? That's pretty damn cheap. I think our axles are about $150 USD or so. For $65 I would just take a couple to the track with me and any tools to do a replacement on site.

You won't snap them with wheel hop.
