Default Finally got my 5AT in the 13's!!!

Hey guys! I went to the track last night and finally broke in the 13's! It was my first run since adding the plenum spacer and hi-flo cats. I know I can go faster once I figure out the right tire psi for my nitto dr's, brake launch rpm and shift rpm's. I ran 30 psi all around, Brake launched at 2000 rpm's and shifted at 6500 rpm's. Next time I will try 25 psi, Brake launch at 2250 rpm's and shift at 6750 rpm's. Thanks to domz, alberto and everybody else who gave me great advice. After looking over my slips,my trap speed seems really low. I need to get my 60ft down to about 1.9, my trap speed needs to be around 101mph. Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated!

The trap does seem low because my G35 sedan auto with just a Z-pipe consistently sees 97.5-98.0mph. I think that 3.5 gear is hurting your times. The reason I say that is because I experimented with a set of 225/50R15 drag radials (23.5" tall and about 3" shorter than the OEM 17" rubber) which took my gearing to ~3.5 vs a 3.3. What ended up happening was that I was required to shift to 4th about 150' short of the finish line. This was far from ideal and it ended up sucking about about 2mph. I did two passes with the DRs and ran two low 14.5s@95mph and then I swapped back on the OEM 17s and was back to running high 14.4s@97mph.

When I race, I manually shift the 2-3 at an indicated 6400rpms which executes the shift at ~6700rpms. I then hold 3rd through the run and tap the limiter about 50' past the finish line.

Awesome man congrats. Did you have full tank of gas? Stereo equipment? Spare tire? Take that all out and run 1/8 tank next time, see if that helps your trap. Good job though

Thanks davidv. What tire psi do you run in your rear tires?

You know I had to shift into 4th before I crossed the finish line. I seen a chart that said if you had a 3.5 gear top speed in 3rd was only 90mph? Is this true?

I was fully race prepped. 1/4 tank gas, no spare,no jack. Should I be at the end of 3rd gear when I cross the line or should I shift to 4th? Thanks for the props man!

What did you run on street tires? I ask because I have the same mods on my 5AT (minus the cats, grounding kit, and flash) and have run 14.3 @ 98 on street tires. Plus my track is at 3000ft alt. Im thinking about getting some 16" drag radials.

As a side note, my trap speeds went up after I switched to the 3.5 pumpkin.

Bone stock on street tires I ran 14.3 @95 mph. My 5at seems to really like more air. The breathing mods are the way to go. Since I got my dr's last year I haven't lost traction yet at the track. My 60ft's are consistent 2.0 The only problem I have sometimes is bogging off the line. I'm still searching for the "magic" combination at the track in terms of tire psi, brake launch rpm and shift rpm. anyway it's still fun just going to the drag strip and beating srt4's and mustang gt's in my 5at!! Good luck with your 5at!

Thanks man. Last time out I was spinning too much off the line but still trapping 98mph on 14.4-14.5 ETs. 60ft times were all 2.1. Id like to get 1.9 60FTs with some drag radials.
The elevation and heat here sucks. A couple of years ago when it was 100 degress outside my car ran 15.4 with a pop charger and Injen SES! Yeah, thats how much it sucks! LOL

i don't understand how DOMZ gets mids 13s on his 5AT while everyone else gets low 14s to high 13s on their 5AT?...

i'm guessing a normal stock 5AT would only get 14.5??

Bone stock I ran in the 14.1-14.3 range. I've trapped 98mph before I added the spacer and cats. I think the 5at guys that run in the higher 14 range either run at crappy tracks or don't prep the car right. i.e. take out the spare,jack,1/4 tank gas, tcs off, brake fuse pulled, proper launch rpm's, shift points and tire psi. Some guys probally leave the car in auto mode also, which is slower.Anyway a normal stock 5at is easily low 14's all day if prepped right.

I always leave my spare in and dont pull the brake fuse. My car would definitely be good for 13s if it wasnt for the high elevation here.

I totally agree. Elevation at my track is 300ft.Where domz races at i think is right at sea level. Your car is really sucking wind at that high an elevation.

Yep, that sounds right. I remember when I had the short drag radials, the 3-4 shift happenend right around an indicated 90-92mph. With my 17s, I can hold 3rd to 100-101mph.

Good times man, keep plugging at it...1.9's are definately possible on a stock stall, especially with DR's...are you bogging at all off the line? That is my biggest fear about getting DR's full time.

If you bog off the line Dom then just raise the pressure and/or dont heat them up as much. BTW havent seen you on in a while man...

Good to hear from ya domz. You gave me some real good tips about a month ago thru pm's. I've found that the lower I went on rear psi the slower my 60ft's got. I raised my rear psi to 30 and cut a 2.0 60ft. Next time I might even try 35 psi. I only brake launched at 2000 rpm's. I'll try 2500rpm's next.
