Default Need advice on what kind of helmet to get.

I already ordered a fire retatardant racing jacket and now I need a helmet per NHRA rules for Cali Speedway. I don't know how strict they are or how well they enforce the rules but I would rather be safe than sorry. I have my old helmet from back in the day when I used to drag my Civic (mid 13's was fast for a Civic 10 years ago ). But it has a M90 rating which is way old and expired. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good helmet that isn't too expensive? Please post pix if possible along with the make and model. Thanks!

Checkout HelmetCity.com Any SA2005 should be good to go. I'm sure David will respond soon.

Thanks bro, I will check that out. SA2005 are definitely good to go but those seem to be really pricey. I know that any M2005 or dot-218 helmets are also acceptable. Those seem to be more reasonably priced. There are so many to chose from though. I just wanted to get a feel for what people on the forum here get/prefer.

i got my pyrotect helmet locally. i think it was under $150 with helmet bag.

you don't need anything fancy. most tracks still accept SA2000 helmets, but if you want to future proof yourself, get an SA2005 approved helmet.

didn't realize cali speedway required a fire retardant suit. i know your car is boosted, but didn't realize it was fast enough to need a suit.

I don't need a suit but because I have a SC on a car that didn't come with it OEM, they require just the jacket not the whole suit. The helmet is required for running faster than 13.99 on any vehicle.

I wear a open-face Bell Mag-4. This is dual use: drag racing and autocross. For autocross I think it provides better visibility than a closed-face helmet. About $280.

I have been buying helmets for 30 years and would only trust my brain to Bell or Simpson.

Thanks for the info David. Do you have any hookups on helmets?? I need to buy really soon. The street legal drags are coming up at Cali Speedway at the beginning of Jan. and I need a helmet.

SA2000 helmets are good for the rest of the year, but come 1/1/08 they are not.

Two things.

1) Someone mentioned using an "M" helmet, maybe it was you - check with the track you plan to run with, because some don't accept the "M" helmets.

2) If you need a jacket, then you also need a 5-point harness, NHRA roll bar, and driver's side door bar. The jacket is required for runs of less than 11.5s, which also brings the requirements I listed above. If you are between 11.5 and 13.99, you only need the helmet, not these other items.

The fire-retardant jacket is not a bad idea anyway.

Jegs, in my experience, is overpriced by 20% on most products across the board. *shrug*

I'd also mention that an open-faced SA-05 helmet is the way to go with a car that still has airbags. SCCA has found that airbag deployment with a closed face helmet has a higher risk of chin and jaw injuries. Not that you'll be road racing your Z, but the risks remain the same.

I'd also suggest you look at Impact racing helmets.

I believe these expiration dates are valid:

NHRA Helmet Expiration Dates
-Snell 90.....Expired
-Snell 95.....Expired
-Snell K98.....1/1/2009
-Snell 2000.....1/1/2012
-Snell 2005.....1/1/2017

Reference: http://www.tmccc.org/rules2.html

Would someone verify? Thanks.

not 100% true. The single layer fire jacket rule was enacted last year. Its for all non-oem forced induction cars. So if you have an after market blower, then you are required to have a single layer fire jacket with a SFI 3.2A/1 rating. This rule is independent of ET or Trap.

That's what I was told at the track.

This is true. I confirmed it with Cali Speedway and it is also in the NHRA rulebook. So I need a helmet with a minimum M2005 rating and at minimum a fire retardant single layer jacket with a SFI 3.2A/1 rating. The helmet is for any vehicle going faster than 13.99 and the jacket for having an aftermarket SC on my car.

I know he needs the fire jacket. scott300 was saying he would need 5 point roll bar, door bar and harness which wasnt true.
The jacket rule is a new rule for after market FI that was put in place last yr.
