Red face Quarter Mile Newbie

I have an 03 350. I went for my first time ever to the drag strip so my friend with his cobalt ss/sc stage 2 could see what car can get the quarter faSTER... The best run he had was 14.1 and I cant get any better than 14.5's. I'm really consistent but just much lower than i was expecting with my mods. I have a jwt pop charger, 5/16 plenum spacer and an hks replica exhaust.

these were my times
R/T .050
60' 2.223
330 6.233
1/8 9.461
MPH 76.71
1000 12.19
1/4 14.508
MPH 97.77

I'm thinking about putting my stock intake box back on.. i heard that can help. I did over torque two bolts on my lower plenum when putting the spacer on but i spoke with motordyne and they said it wasn't a problem. No ses codes at all and my car runs just as good as it always has.. been driving it like this for probably 6 months.. could it be effecting power at all?
I did beat my friends cobalt a couple times but his trap mph is still always faster than mine.. I'm sure i could still use some more experience.. any input is greatly appreciated.

Just curious, what track are you at in Ohio. I haven't ran much quarter mile but I do watch at Kilkare and Edgewater!

poor driving is the only thing at play here. nothing to do with the car. 60' times need alot of work

practice more.

While the driving is poor, it is because you have a lack of experience. Drag racing doesnt come easy for most EVER.

Keep going to the track, and work on that launch. After you can nail consistent 2.0's you can concentrate on the shifting.

Curious to see the breakdown of your friends slip?

If your friend is consistently trapping higher then there's a good chance he's just making more power than you.

Thanks for the input guys. I can only find one of his bad runs, his times were

R/T .079
60' 2.328
330 6.336
1/8 9.495
MPH 77.52
1000 12.214
1/4 14.485
MPH 99.77

He said that his clutch has been slipping and he plans to get a new one soon. Were really competitive and i wanna beat him ha. I used to rape him before he recently got his stage 2. We run at edge water and were going again next Friday for sure. I would love to break into the 13s.. what rpm should i be launching at? What rpm should i be shifting at? Any tips would be great thanks

Rpm launch will depend on track temp, prep, your clutch condition and your tires.

Ideally as high as possible that will allow some spin but not a burnout and you never want to bog of course. Aim for 2.0 60ft's. Tire pressure at 27psi to help slightly, no lower.

Do a quick spin after you go AROUND the water box, try not to go thru it. Don't do a burnout on street tires.

Shift at redline every gear.

Thanks Alberto, your the man. I remember watching some of your crazy youtube vids before I ever bought a 350, keep em coming. I'll definitely try the lower tire pressure and I always go through the water box.. I never knew I shouldn't. We decided to go again tonight, hopefully I'll keep getting better.

Just remember if your tires are wet you're going to spin. Goodluck. What was the temps like when you ran?

Are you pressing the gas peddle all the way to the floor? I find this helps.

I'm assuming you're on street tires... If so, then definitely avoid the water box. Water gets trapped in the grooves on your tires, which means your tires stay wet.

Props for keeping it off the street, by the way

I went again last night and my times didn't get any better.. guess i just have to keep practicing. I feel like I'm giving it everything i possibly can but then again I am very inexperienced on drag racing. The temps were high eighty's and humid.

With a better launch you could get your time to 14.1 - 14.2 with the same driving. With better driving you can get it even lower. I would recommend checking this site out, and reading it a couple of times:

Your RT is decent. Not bad for a first timer! I'm no pro, but maybe have 100 passes worth of slips from my old Maxima. Launching is all about experience and constantly trying to make adjustments. I took my racecar out for the first time since it's turbo upgrade last month. It was also my first time back at the strip in about 5 years so it felt totally new again. I could not beat a 2.2 sec 60 foot. I either bogged or totally slipped. I was topping out at 114mph lol. At the time I just wanted a baseline and ran with a usual tire psi of 35 and basically ran what I brought up to the line. If you want a reference I ran a 2.0, 14.0@98mph in my old 4th gen Maxima 5sp. I remember once I missed the gear twice and still ran a 14.5. Sorry, never ran my G35.

Another way you could pick up a tenth is to adjust your shift indicator closer to the limiter maybe at redline. Once you see the light there will be a slight lag in shifting. By the time you've upshifted the powerband will be exactly where you want it to be just before the limiter at redline. You wanna feel youself shifting smoothly as fast as humanly possible. The rhythm is such that the next gear is already selected just as your foot depresses the clutch pedal and the clutch disengages the trans. It's done so smooth without banging the gearbox. The worst you'll hear/feel is a thud from the rear diff as the rest of the drivetrain catches up
