Default Anyone miss shift and hit 8000+rpm yet?

I know a few Maximas with the FWD trans that have...a few blew, a few didn't, and now I know of one 350Z that miss shifted and lived.

Just wondering if any of you have had this problem or heard of it even with the RWD trans and whether your VQ survived or not?

Any details on how/why it happened?

Thanks.

Yeah...I cringe every time too. And then once it was such a close race that I was watching our cars cross the line instead of the RPM's and bounced it right off the limiter. You'll be alright though as long as you don't make a habit of it. The limiter is there to keep you from blowing it.

When the Z only had around 6600 miles on it, I put Redline MT in the tranny and 75W90 in the diff. The stick moved around neutral much easier, so much in fact I missed 4th gear and went into 2nd going 75 mph. I instantly begged the 8k on the tach put luckly my left foot was still on the clutch and I slammed it within 1/2 a second i think. So far so good.

I have the rev limiter set to 6900 by technosquare, I was drag racing, the first time with the supercharger, and accidentally hit 2nd instead of 4th, somewhere just north of 80mph. no damage, and subsequent runs netted the same times.

Enron Exec and 2003z - Any chance you caught the peak RPM on an Apexi S-AFC or similar?

Also, what did the rear tires of the car do?

I was on drag slicks, and the car just rapidly slowed. Dont know the peak, but would guess the needle would have been at 8500 if the scale went that high. it looked about 500 over redline or more.

I once got 2nd instead of 4th near 90mph....tach was pegged....
my tires broke loose in the rear and the car got a little sideways. I immediately got the clutch back in...no damage. Times and traps in sig run AFTER incident.

I did it a few times in my old maxima (97 SE) too....no problems there either.

Yikes~!

You didn't catch that one on video did you?

Dayyyyymn...I know what happens in a FWD, but I'd imagine that would be sCCCARY in RWD. Imagine turning or something and that happens.

Nope...no video...but it happened so fast the car didn't really have a chance to get out of control. I will say I'm much more careful when downshifting from 6th to 4th now

I too did this in my G35, went from 3rd to 2nd instead of 4th. Saw the tach get up to about 8000 before I pressed the clutch back in. Only did it once and I think that is all I will ever do it!!!

Seems like it is a pretty common occurance in the G35/350Z though, maybe the gates on the shifter and aligned a little off???

I've heard of an RSX do the same(blew engine)..., however I wonder if this is a popular Nissan trans issue or any manual trans issue.

I've never heard of a trans that lets you shift into the wrong gear before, but I'm stuck in a Nissan world.

Should NOT be possible IMO. Trans should "lock" you out or something, right?

It's just poor shifting....pretty much ANY manual transmission will let you go into the "wrong" gear if you pull the lever that way.

My buddies done it in his vette....and I have another friend that's done it in an ITR and bent a valve.

did it twice and lived. as a matter of fact I am routinely getting 22-23 mpg around town where new i was lucky to get as high as 19.

Engine seems fine, no noises

change your oil immediately after doing that though to check for pieces of bearings/valves etc that got damaged.

It's the even more BFE, AZ guy.

Were yours also 3rd to 2nd and what RPM did you see? Did the wheels lock up?

Sadly, misshifting is a common occurance among Celica owners, also. Most of the time the engine does not survive.

BriGuy, I was on the interstate both times doing about 80, going from 6th to 4th real quick and missing .

Now, if I even come close to thinking I want 4th gear at that speed, I go to 5th first in anticipation

I have yet to misshift on an upshift. I have mis clutched and not pushed the clutch in far enough on the 1-2 shift many times.

Yes BFE is good for the VQ soul though 33k miles and I just got my first registration renewal in the mail today.

73k miles on VQ35DE's so far for me.

No my wheels did not lock up, I caught them both before I wrapped the tach and got the clutch back in. I like to think I have pretty quick reflexes.
