Personally, I love the RS-R exhaust! What I really like about it was the design, it's basically as straight through as you are going to get. With the canister disign there are no baffles or anything, you see straigh through the exhaus can into the pipes.

But the exhaust is anything but quiet. If you run the exhaust with the silencers, it is a little be louder than stock. It sounds nice, and little throatier than stock.

With the silencers removed the exhaust really roars. I mean it's one of the loudest you can by. But it sounds nothing like the weed wacker sound you are talking about. It just really screams. It never rasps or breaks up at all, all the way to red line.

To give you idea:

stock exhuast = ~ 80 - 85 decibals (Sport Z magazine)
RSR w/ silencers = ~ 90 (from 50 ft away)
RSR w/o silncers = 115 decibals (from 50 ft. away)

Zspeed, thanks for the info. I guess I was thinking of the other RS*R exh, the EXmag for the FD. Its advertised as one of the quietest exh notes according to several places. More info here:

Anyways, thanks for the input!

I had a 3" Greddy DP off of my T78, with a 3" Bonez MP, and a Gran Muffler custom mandrel bent 3" exhaust, that exited out of an Apex N1 canister.

Yep, it was loud, REALLY loud!

Yea exhaust for the Z is the ExMag GT II series muffler system. Which is the racing muffler setup. Alot more agressive.

Darril, i think youll be happy with the RSR Exmag for your car. when i was working on Erika's car i was thinking about this exhaust and heard sound clips of it, i loved it. actually i shouldve gotten it for her b/c the Greddy Evo 2 is TOOOOOOOOO quiet. but i didnt go with it because of the black muffler and i figured she wouldnt like it. but anywho, like zspeed says, the RSR exhaust for the Z is the GT 2 series which isnt the same as what you're looking for.

try a straight 4'' exhaust right out of a T78 on a 2JZ...that sounds pretty ****ing SICK! no muffler, no resonator, no cats....nothing. sounded like a camming 8 cylinder at idle, and like the gates of hell opened up at full throtlle

Generic formula for 1/8th to 1/4mi conversion, assuming perfect conditions and driving ability, you can estimate by pluggin your 1/8th into this equation:

(1/8th mi + .22) / .665

9.633 + .22 / .665 = 14.81 or thereabouts.

Yesterday i was launching at about 22-2600 rpm by dumping the clutch. I wouldn't give it no more gas until i knew that the tires were grabbing the road, then i would punch it. If you could give me any advice in to better my launch and lowering my 60 i surely would appreciate it. I really don't like the idea of the feathering the clutch thing i've been hearing because that will tear up the transmission. I need Help so i can beat this S2000 at the track that's been running 9.4 in the 1/8. TIA

If you are on the factory tires I would recommend slipping the clutch when you launch. Don't do a burnout, go around the waterbox, cut sharp back onto the track immediately after the waterbox to maximize the room you have between the waterbox and the staging beams then rev the car up, drop the clutch and spin the tires atleast 1 full revolution to scrub the pebbles and debris off.
Then stage the car. When you are ready just release the clutch a tiny bit until you feel it start to grab. DO NOT roll the car through the beams as you will redlight. Just hold the clutch at the exact position where its about to grab and then bring your revs up to where they should be. If this just test and tune its probably a .500 tree so leave when the second yellow bulb lights up. At this point don't drop the clutch. Just release it so the car starts moving but don't release the pedal completely, instead, give yourself some pedal room so that you are slipping the clutch out of the hole and also don't go wide open throttle. Practice this until you can leave the line without hardly spinning your tires. Practice practice practice! Rome wasn't built in a day.

Slipping the clutch is not going to hurt anything in your tranny. Clutch slip launches are actually easier on your tranny. The question is can your stock clutch disc take the repeated clutch slip launches.

I wouldn't slip the clutch too much. A quick release is better. Too much will do your clutch in.

Vee Tec, glad you stepped in and said that. Thats why I said I wasn't sure if the stock clutch would handle alot of clutch slips. Some stock clutches are engineered to take alot of slippage abuse and others aren't. For example I know EVO clutches can only withstand a handful of clutch slip launches while my girlfriend's 04 Miata has survived countless 6000 RPM clutch slip launches. She literally has a stack of about 35-38 timeslips all via 6K clutch slip launches and the clutch is still like brand new. It's amazing.

Either way, good info. Southern, do what Vee Tec said and just keep practicing your launch. You should be able to get down into the 9.0s or high 8's in the 1/8th which I don't think the S2K will be able to do without some mods. Most importantly, have fun!

Here's my update for my second time at the track with the Z. My best times tonight is as follows:
Tree 0.500
R/T 0.600
60' 2.220
590' 8.598
MPH 78.99
660' 9.168

Where do you think my quarter mile time would be now? I need help with my launch! I've been running 9.4 constantly. What are RPM are you lauching at and tell me how do you do it?

That run would have been around a 14.11 at somewhere probably around 100-101.
Just use this formula. It gives you a good estimate for 1/8th to 1/4 mi conversions:
(1/8th mi ET + .22) / .665
Hope that helps.
