I don't mean to dig this up from the dead but I was curious so I went looking for the weight different. I thought about the SR20 swap just for the intention of saving as much weight as possible.To much surprise it appears based on these two sources that the SR20DET weighs almost identically as much as the VQ35DE. These weights are minus transmission.

dont feel like loking at the links but make sure those are dry and stuff, and im willing to bet the Zs tranny weighs a significant amount more then the sr, plus the SR stays around the same, whereas twin turboing the Z would add alot of weight.

 

that vq motor is stripped down. and im sure that the weight on the sr is fully stock ready to run. we weighed a vq motor that was partially stripped down for a engine rebuild and it was 380+ lbs. and yes like hatebobbarker says, the tranny is another 30lbs give or take. and the vq cant make enough power na so add on 80+lbs for a tt kit. either way, it was significant weight savings.

 

granted it's very creative and different but the Z is a heavy car and adding a sr20 isn't going to fix it's heaviness by a huge amount compared to the S-chassis

i built an s14 with an s15 sr20det with a bunch of goodies and it out handles, out powers, and is just plain more fun than my Z for the cost this guy paid for parts. imo it's a waste but there are always points for innovative swaps...lots of points

the s14 has nothing on my Z in the looks category though

The SR tranny is a bit more than 30lbs, probably a bit closer to 60lbs. I can weigh it over the weekend if it really matters to anyone, just let me know. I've never had the VQ tranny out so I can't vouche for its girth but I do know the SR's tranny is close in size/weight to a mkIII supra tranny (R154).

The SR20DET is 473lbs with all accessories (PS,AC,Alt) and tranny. As far as the VQ goes, the only sources I could find say that it weighs between 460-475lbs, but I believe that is the motor only. It's safe to say you can add between 100-200lbs. to that figure turbocharging and adding the tranny to the VQ.

I would assume that because the placement of the SR in the engine bay is lower and further back, that you would acheive better handling dynamics and a lower CG.

I'm not sure that any of us would notice benifits of this setup on the street, and IMHO I think the VQ fits the Z nicely and will ultimatly be a better fit when compared FI vs. FI. My BPU SR 240 isn't much faster than the Z and it's almost 700 lbs lighter. In fact Kousuke-san of Signal Auto said in that article "he will eventually turn his tuning prowess toward the VQ in the future" and that the SR was utilized for its vast aftermarket support and tuning potential. At the time Signal did this swap the Z was still relatively new and the SR had almost 15 years in the "tuner" market.

If you are going to put an SR20DET into it, you might as well T or TT your VQ.

its a good job, and just from the photo, i can see it was a job well done! less weight is obviously the key that people forget about which was what made the last RX7 so damn sick.

Im still pulling crap outta my car to reduce weight and interior maintenance.
