Just got my new blue ZR home, have to get RIV stuff done, and then store for the winter.

For those that are storing your cars for the winter, what do you guys do to get the car ready for the long freeze?

Also, if anyone has experience bringing up a car from the US, what am I in for when I go to Canadian Tire and get them to check the car and fill out the Form 2. Any recomendations?

 

first of all DO NOT GO TO CANADIAN TIRE, please pay the extra cash and bring it to nissan. There shouldn t be much problems,my buddy brought a z down from north carolina it passed the canadian inspection,so that part will be easy. Your in for some extra taxes,save up for that. As for storage i get a compound shampoo inside outside motor wash,oil change fill your tank with super from petro canada,94 octane,add a gas cleaner in there,and a cover, If your not gonna start it up,disconnect the battery and leave the windows open a crack to save the seal.

The RIV office has a contract with Canadian Tire to 'inspect' the car to identify any changes that must be made to bring it up to Canadian spec. As for doing the work 'trust me', LAST place I would take my baby.

Congrats on the Z.

I am not exactly familiar with the RIV (being as how the dealer I purchased from took care of all of that) but I would recommend doing a search on "winter storage" you will find a thread which deals directly with correct winter storage method for your Z.

And junior is right when he says prepare to dish out some extra cash, you will also have install DRL's.

There are other shops that are licensed to perform Federal inspections -- Canadian Tire does not have exclusive rights and is only one of them. If you were in Vancouver area I could recommend 2 or 3 other shops instead of Canadian Tire.

I imported my 2006 Z back in May and did all the paperwork myself. The DRL conversion cost me $270 and the shop that did the conversion was licensed to perform both Federal and Provincial inspections.

Did you already receive Form 2 from RIV which outlines the things to do in order to meet Federal guidleines -- DRL, Metric speedo, air bag warning sign in English/French, child seat tether anchor ?? My '06 had dual readout speedo (standard), child seat anchor, and English/French airbag warning from the original US owner. So all I had to get done was the DRL's. You cannot get a Federal inspection without this form and you won't get this form without a recall clearance letter from the manufacturer.

Sorry if I'm already stating what you may have already done.

I can't help you on the winterizing though... In Vancouver area I usually have my car on the road all year except for a week or two when there is snow on the roads.

 

So guys

Get this, just got back from CT and they stamped and approved 'everything', so good enough for me. Did not ask about the DRL's, and all paperwork is done.

Only $35, but still rediculous to have to get emissions tested.
Tomorrow off to the liscence bureau, pay the PST and get the plates.

Tons of paperwork, and time, but well worth it.

Wow, nice. Although i am somewhat curious as to why they did not request that you install the DRL's, considering that they are mandatory in Canada.

What part of canada?

This will be my first meet as well, I didnt get a chance to attend this summer as I only recently picked up my Z.

But the weather is showing rain.. If the weather is poor my Z is staying parked, and I probably wouldnt be going.

But sign up on that site so you can keep up on the local summer meets and track days.

whats the taxes for importing a vehicle from the states to canada?

 

6.1% duty... plus 6% GST at time of import. PST added to that. Here in BC we have to pay the PST at time of insuring -- not sure in ON.

 

Ok guys, here is the lowdown on importing

Eg. for a 20,000 US car

1. Buy your car, do the conversion @ 1.16 = $23,200 Can.

2. When you hit the border they ding you for $Can conversion taxed at 6.1%, = $1,415.20

3. They then DOUBLE-ding you for the 6% GST on top of the $23,200 + the Duty @ $1,415.20 = $1,476.00
+ the $100.00 excise tax
+ The $200.00 RIV form1/2
Total at the border = $26,391.20

4. Now you get the car home, and head over to the nearest Provincial Liscensing place low and behold its tax time again. This time you pay the PST (Ont @ 8%) on the original converted $23,200 @ 8% = $1,856.00

So in a "nutshell", the $20,000 US car costs = $28,247.00 "ALMOST" to your doorstep.
If you cant drive it home, Ie. too far, bad weather, you have 2 choices

1. Get down there, rent a truck with trailer (as I did), and tow it home, or

2. Pay $1,500.00 + to have it shipped
