Thinking of moving back to Canada
I was originally born in Cambridge, Ontario and my parents moved down to NC when I was 11.
Lately I can't stop thinking about going back up there. All of my family is up there minus my parents. They can't leave probably for another 5-10 years, would have to sell dads business and wrap up some stuff.
Not sure why I have been thinking about it so much. I know housing has gone up in Cambridge so much that it is retarded. I would live with my grandparents until I could find a job, probably in the GTA area. Hopefully I will finish my masters in dec 08 and would be able to entertain the idea in the new year.
Any thoughts about software engineering/QA/PMP jobs up there? I've checked out Monster/Career Builder/Craigslist and there seems to be a healthy amount of jobs being posted.

lol I mean I do ok for being 25, am making 50k now. Figured if I can get to that or a bit more it would be fine.
As for why, I really just want a change of scenery, I really hate Raleigh. Every time I go back up there I miss it a lot and just seems like it would be pretty cool.
But then again, I can totally see me moving up there and hating it shortly thereafter.

lol mike, why you gotta show off like that :P
But yea, Canada's a nice quiet place to live in, though i haven't heard of much people who would like to come back.
Tech market isn't bad...though I would think you'd make more coin in the US. BTW Rim is moving from Waterloo to Sauga...google kept stealing their waterloo grads haha.

Yeah I realize 50k wouldn't go that far. I figure once I finish my masters I should be able to get up around 70-85 or so. That could be wishful thinking though.
Again it was just an idea. I won't be done until at least dec 08, so it's plenty of time to do some research.

Check out RIM (Research in Motion) aka Blackberry. In Waterloo. I think we have like 23 buildings in the area now and we allways seem to have about 500 jobs open with lots of software positions.
RIM is a Great place to work IMO and a short drive from Cambridge. The owners booked the Skydome for everyone in Nov and we had a supprise Rock concert for everyone with Van Halen. This week Everyone got a new Roots RIM watch. Not bad if you ask me.
We have a number of Z's in the parking lot's and a few ZR's. I think I am the only one at RIM on this forum though.
Good Luck, I can't really help you with a job in software but they take applications all the time just send it in via email.
(I should have been a Dentist and made lots of coin like Mike, mind you software guys do very well.)

What? everyone knows 119K is where the top tax bracket starts? That info is available online. 46% income tax. CPP is like 5%. A few other deductions. You are working until June for the man basically.

I think my main problem is that I get bored a lot. I was bored in university, I'm bored in Raleigh even with grad school and working full time. Hoping that being back home might help this. Probably not but it might be worth a shot when the time comes.

Its funny cus I am bored of T.O. I have an urge to head down south to florida.
A close friend of mine just Passed the florida bar and is purchasing a house in Miami. Another has an importing company in Atlanta, with a warehouse in Orlando, so I would have friends to "chill" with..
But I think I would miss my family and friends here..

haha, ya I have been contemplating moving for the past year or so.
I actually turned down a job in bermuda.. It was a sweet offer, but I would have been forced to leave most of what I own behind.
More importantly, I would not have been able to take the Z with me..
*where is this GLOBAL warming everyone keeps talking about..*

I appreciate all of the responses so far.
A few more comments/thoughts:
1) I don't know if being bored is always a good thing. I definitely do aspire to want more, which causes me to work hard every day and make decisions (grad school) even though I don't always want to do them (hint: grad school ). But the thought of working for 40 more years scares the crap out of me. We just had a guy retire from IBM/Lenovo with 43 years. I almost cried, just thinking about working for the same place that long.
2) Toronto seems like it would be more of a hip place to live than Raleigh. Lately we've been going to Chapel Hill/Durham, which is pretty trendy in its own right. But it definitely lacks in the allure compared to what I think a large city like Toronto would be like.
3) I definitely miss the snow. 5 years at Appalachian State, we had snow just like Cambridge. As for cold weather, not really a factor. Nasty cold, like below 0 can eat it but for the most part I'd rather be cold than super hot.
4) Not really sure on any of the health care aspects anymore. All I hear about is long lines everywhere. Any comments on TRUE experiences? I don't get sick a lot but I would like to think if I really needed it, it would be there for me.
5) Transporation in Toronto: I would need a second car, most likely a truck or something with AWD. What about public transportation?
I will definitely keep an eye out on employment opportunities. My grandmother actually recommended looking at RIM about 5 years back when I was still in school. But there definitely seems to be a healthy amount of IT work as it's still a large metropolis for Canada.
