What amsoil engine oil weight to use?
anyone running 0w30? I'm not a big fan of Mobil 1. Wondering if anyone is running Amsoil and if so, what weight. Thanks,

Amsoil says any car that recommends 5w30 can use the 0w30. The 0w30 is the most advanced blend they have, which is why I'm moreso trying to get comfortable that it's ok to use. If 5w30 is recommended then the 0w30 may be okay.
As you say, since the temps down here don't dip low very much, you don't get the benefits of the 0w or 5w as much. However, I'm not yet convinced there's a detriment to going with the 0w30, especially since it's their most advanced one.
Did you notice your engine running quieter with the Amsoil 10w30 over the dino? (less sewing machine sounds)?
In my old car I noticed a quieter engine and lower oil temps with the 0w30 over Mobil 1.

After reading some of the data Amsoil has put out comparing their XL line to their standard 5w30 and 10w30 lines, it seems the XL provides a bit less protection - higher scarring in the ball bearing test and lower overall total base number when compared to the equivalent weights outside the XL line. I'm sure the difference is negligible in practice. The price difference is nonexistent, if anything. I'm just surprised. By the XL moniker, I thought it would be their bomb line.
You have to do a little digging because some of their ball bearing tests are at 1200 rpms, some are at 1800 rpms.
The difference between 10w30 and 5w30 seem negligible. When comparing the 2 to their 0w30, the 0w wins the balling bearing scar test at 1800 rpms (.374 versus .40). Soooo...... it would appear all things equal, the 0w30 would be the best one.
But is the 0w30 worth the extra $2.65 per quart? In the end I think I'd have far better protection with the 5w30 or the 10w30 over Mobil 1, so maybe I'll just go with that and save the extra $15 or so.

I use Amzoil 5W30 in summer and 0W30 the rest of the year (Minneapolis).
My old 2001 Audi S4 twin turbo recommended a 0W30 for best startup, protection and longevity. Tests showed that the high viscosity (the 30 end of the spectrum) was not changed at all by going with the 0W vs. the 5W. I'm probably fine going with 0W30 all year.

I dumped the S4 off of lease with 64k miles on the original everything. I MTM chipped it at 2k miles, loved every minute of it. I just couldn't stand the thought of having the turbos go south and explaining to the wife the $5-6k expenditure, so I got out and found the G35 for less money and somewhat overall better value. I even left the MTM suspension and MTM spacers on the car, because I didn't want to have the stock components put back in, and the spacers made it look normal. I kept the stock springs and shocks for about 6 months before I put them out in the trash.
I loved that car. I wish I had money out the anus to put in a full stage 3 kit and keep the car as a secondary car.

I use to use Amsoil 0-30 but it got to be too expensive so I switch to 5-30. The car felt little heavier and did not seem as smooth so for a while, I was using Mobil1 5-30. There was not much difference between the Amsoil 5-30 & Mobil 5-30. Than last oil change, I decided to try Mobil1 0-20. My car felt lighter & smoother again. It felt similar as when I was Amsoil 0-30. Also, I seem to get better milage.
I know that 0-20 is not recomended for the 350Z but because its a thin oil just like Amoil 0-30, I am going to try it out for a while. If thing start to feels weird, I am going to go back to Amsoil 0-30.

I just switched to AmsOil 0-30. It is the best. I intend to leave it in for most of the year, but change the filter. Has anyone changed just the filter and not the oil? Do you have to drain the oil to change the filter?
More importantly, I switched to 75-90 in the transmission and it may have solved the terrible shiffting issues.

Why not give Mobil 1 0W-40 a try? Having tried 5W-30, 10W-30 and 5W-40, my egine seems to rev best with 0W-40. Z33 in Japan actually runs 40weight oil. We run thinner oil for fuel economy(or so I have read)
