5AT worth upgrading?
I have an automatic Z and I love it to death. So far even though I am handicapped by the auto, I still can beat the cars I am supposed too and lose to cars I would anyway. However I have been doing a lot of forum reading these past few days and I am impressed with how much power can come out of a NA. I don’t want to do any FI but headers, intake and exhaust sound like they may be worth the money.
I figured I could get headers, exhaust and intake and expect about 10% more HP at the wheels (22ish) But how does that translate into speed? Will my ¼’s drop into the high 13’s?
Also with upgrades like headers, exhaust and intake is that enough modification to warrant an ECU upgrade and with all 4 of these things installed could I expect up to 15% more HP at the wheel? (33ish)
I searched around but I couldn’t find any direct answers so if you know a thread where these questions have already been answered please just post a link. Thanks

well it depends. Most 5AT vs. 6MT races are driver's races....it's that close. I'm slightly modded with basic bolt-ons and I beat my friend's 6MT without much sweat. Then again he has the advantage if the race is at higher speeds since the gearing is more aggressive in the manuals. All in all you can make the auto quite fast with the correct bolt-ons.

arg... i think this thread has been jacked.
No way I would even consider changing the tranny out. Not going to start a 5AT vs 6MT argument but I have my reason for going 5AT. Anytime anyone asks me if they should get 5AT or 6MT I tell them if they are on the fence about it they should go with the 6MT but I am happy with my 5AT.
Anyway back to what I was asking. I would be interested to hear from members who have done the basic NA stuff to their 5AT and what the results were. Thanks.

If you do the ECU I would be very interested to see what happens. It looks like across the midrange rpm's you have 10+ hp increase. Is that noticable in performance? I find it strange no one has 1/4 times for a NA automatic with minor upgrades.

Their are plenty of people on this forum who have posted quarter mile times for stock auto's and stock auto's with minor upgrades. There have been plenty of people who have ran high 13's stock with an auto. There is nothing wrong with a auto tranny. I hate it when someone asks me why I have a auto. I just love the way they work. Sure I have had manuals before and love them to, but they are a pain when something goes wrong. Too easy to miss shift at drag strip, but they are nice for track racing. I love both of them and can't see why people won't agree on this. They both have there avantages and thats that. So lets not agrue about which one's better and help this guy out.
P.S. If you upgrade the tq converter and valve body, you will be good to go. If your goals are too get more then 700hp out of it without worry then SGP does a full tranny rebuild that will hold up to 800hp easy. Also, Level Ten does a good job at rebuilds. Have had plenty of trannys done by them in the past.

That sounds about right. You really don't need the valve body right away, but the tq converter you will need to get 300-uphp to the wheels without slipping. It's like how a person with a manual needs to upgrade a clutch when they go this far also.

i think that modding an auto will proabbly be very much worth it. I ran a 13.9 comlpetely stock and since i added test pipes and intake and I ran a 13.80 with a 2.1 0-60. now I have borla exhaust and know how to do a proper burnout with my auto, i think that i should be well into 13.7 or even 13.6. If your planning on modding the hell out of your auto though torque converter is necessary. The 6mt gears are very tempting but if your going to go FI its very unecessary. Like I said, when driven perfect the manual is faster, but i havent lost to an manual yet. I also trapped 102 when I ran the 13.80 so its not really like my top end is dying out. gl with your car.
