Gas mileage in heavy traffic
I hate heavy traffic as my gas mileage for my 350ZR goes down about 1.5 mpg. I usually get 18.5-19.5 mpg but lately it seems there has been a lot of heavy traffic and with my last tank I only got about 17.0-17.5 mpg. Anyone else have the same experience?
It depends on how you drive it in the traffic. If you're gunning it often to get into the best lane/s your mileage will suffer. A few years ago in my old SE-R I got some of the best city mileage I ever recorded (over >10 years) when I had to drive to jury duty in downtown LA. This happened because I decided to be smarter about how I was driving it. I ended up keeping a more consistant speed and not stabbing the gas. Instead of my usual 21-24MPG I had gotten for years driving less congested parts of the city at 65-80MPH I now got 27-28MPG going slower and in traffic. Slower driving will most certainly net you increased MPG as long as it's not too stop and go. I learned what lanes to be in at certain parts of the freeway to keep the speeds up of course. Yes, results will vary dramatically.
