Default Iridium Plug check

My Iridium plugs (which are 1 step colder) look as though the engine is running lean (even though I just had this dyno'ed and the air/fuel curves look great.

The standard NGK plugs had a nice coffee with cream color but these Iridium plugs look white with a hint of gray. Have any of you ever pulled your plugs to check their color as an indicator of how your engine is running?

Sorry to go off topic, but how do you like your Venom kit?

so far, The Venom kit kicks ***.
I dyno'ed with a 100 shot at 321 HP, and the tuner says it was misfiring due to having to wide a gap on the plugs. He thinks if I close up the gap it'll run 325 to 330 HP.

They were suggested by the tech at Venom (and by several other people on this forum)

Absolutley! I really can't tell though by your description. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words. Go to Pep Boys and look on the inside back cover of a Hayne's manual. They have about 10 pictures of different fouled spark plugs and a picture of a normal one.

Iridium plugs allow for a greater spark but dont last as long due to the fact that iridium is more brittle than platinum. Platinum plugs are fine for N/A cars, but if your running FI or nitrous you are safer with iridium.

Plug color is only an indication of whether or not you are using the correct heat range for any given application (IE NA, FI, etc.). Carbon deposits appear as a different color based on how hot the plug gets. When you are on nirtous most likely it is the correct heat range, but since you are not using this all the time it makes the plug the wrong heat range for normal conditions.

Actually, Iridium is the least affected by heat and so lasts much longer than the other two metals(copper and platinum) while still being a good conductor of electricity.

Melting point temperatures of the three main electrode metals:

Copper = 1981.4 degrees F

Platinum = 3221.6 degrees F

Iridium = 4370 degrees F !!!
